This position is for a Nursing Attendant in the Nursing Float Pool, working full-time evening shifts. The successful candidate will assist in the implementation of the nursing process by performing direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse. Responsibilities include maintaining a safe and orderly patient care environment and unit.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent Required.
  • Graduate of Certified Nursing Attendant program or minimum 6 months relevant experience.
  • BLS or Heartsaver CPR/AED certification (Issued by the American Heart Association-AHA) is required upon entry to the position.
  • Working knowledge of English is evident in verbal, reading and writing abilities.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with Admission/Transfer/Discharge of patients, including orienting patients, providing toileting supplies, safeguarding personal property, gathering belongings, completing clothing lists, assisting with patient movement, and preparing bedside units.
  • Conducts patient rounds for toileting, positioning, comfort, safety, and personal needs; answers patient call lights promptly.
  • Assembles O2 and suction set-ups.
  • Provides basic hygiene to patients, including bathing, AM/PM care, mouth care, denture care, hair care, nail and foot care, shaving, and assisting with bedpans, urinals, and commodes.
  • Prepares patients for meals by clearing overbed tables, positioning patients, assisting with utensils and food, and feeding patients.
  • Performs and/or assists patients with simple treatments, including removing and reapplying SCD wraps and assisting RNs in enema procedures.
  • Collects specimens as directed by the RN.
  • Informs the RN of any audible clinical alarms (e.g., IV pumps, feeding pumps, ventilators, bedside monitors).
  • Assists with moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients.
  • Assists with the removal and security of patient personal items prior to procedures.
  • Changes linen in accordance with policy and as necessary.
  • Takes and electronically records blood pressure, temperature, pulse, pulse oximetry, and respiration per care level standard and as directed by the RN, reporting abnormalities.
  • Weighs patients and electronically records weight on admission, as ordered, and/or as directed by the RN.
  • Measures and records oral intake, urinary output, bowel elimination, gastric and other drainage onto I&O record, calculates 8-hour totals, and empties drainage bags.
  • Performs post-mortem care.
  • Performs safety observations for patients on continuous observation or in restraints, per policy and as directed.
  • Reports any observed changes in patient's condition to the RN.
  • Responds to and meets patient/family needs and customer concerns with compassion and understanding, establishing effective, caring relationships.
  • Maintains competence through in-service and educational programs.
  • Attends staff meetings and reviews/signs minutes of meetings not attended.
  • Maintains a safe and uncluttered environment of care in patient rooms, including removing excessive furniture, supplies, and equipment.
  • Assists with supply and equipment management of patient, procedure, and supply rooms per department standards.
  • Maintains cleanliness of utility rooms and pantries as assigned.
  • Performs other duties such as errands, relieving other units, bringing stretchers, and assisting other health team members as directed.
