About The Position

The medical assistant performs a variety of patient care activities in the clinic. The expectation is provider support and will assist nursing within defined limits of practice. Work requires general supervision, but every day assignments are carried out with a considerable degree of independence.

Requirements

  • Exceptional customer service skills.

  • Strong computer skills; including but not limited to spreadsheets, word documents, internet, e-fax, email and Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

  • CPR Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures exam rooms are stocked and prepared for patient care.
  • Assists providers in clinic by rooming patients as soon as possible from check-in, capturing vitals, SDOH and subjective intake information and updating the medication list to accurately reflect how a patient is administering home medications.
  • Recognizes impending emergencies and acts appropriately.
  • Notifies providers when patients are ready for examination/treatment, assuring patients are seen in a timely fashion as well as keeping rooms full for consistent flow of patients.
  • Notifies providers of scheduling changes due to emergencies and assists in helping to minimize chaos as well as communicates to front desk and patients any unforeseen delays (i.e. physicians being tied up with patient care).
  • Assists providers in addressing nursing home correspondence with any provider orders, whether verbal or written, with provider’s signature as well as verbal documentation for labs and x-rays ordered by the provider to authenticate orders per clinic policy and updating the medical record to reflect the communication.
  • Assists providers by updating the EMR with outside provider medication order changes, outside procedure and immunizations for proper tracking and care by sorting, reviewing and follow-up on any incoming patient records (lab, x-ray, consults, notes, faxes, messages, etc.)
  • Reviews and addresses any concerns with covering provider in the absence of a provider for extended vacations.
  • Ensure proper review and attention is given to pertinent information.
  • Maintains appropriate charting of patient record in a timely manner.
  • Attends meetings with pharmaceutical representatives or providers for educational purposes as requested.
  • Responds to the specific needs of the provider and conforms to each provider’s individual practice style as well as maintaining uniformity throughout the clinic.
  • Complete knowledge of all laboratory tests as well as ability to perform accurately the authorized waived tests, i.e. glucometer, hemacue, dip stick UA, UCG, rapid strep, influenza and hemoccult readings, etc.
  • Participation in periodic reviews and training to assure accuracy and compliance with protocols.
  • Schedules appointments and completes required forms/records for consultations, referrals to specialist providers for treatment.
  • Conducts hearing and vision screening, breathing treatments, peak flow meters, oximetry and vital signs accordingly to operation guidelines to insure validation of results for treatment purposes.
  • Participates in maintaining all exam and procedure rooms and lab assuring all are stocked with supplies, instruments and equipment as well as making sure rooms are clean, well-organized and as sanitary as possible reporting any concerns to clinic coordinator or clinic director.
  • Participates in sterilizing instruments utilizing PCH autoclave and wrap keeping a count of instruments as well as restocking them upon return making sure and adequate supply is available during turnaround time.
  • Help maintain inventory of instruments and medical supplies, etc. and notifying designated stocker of needed orders.
  • Assists in continued monitoring of medical instruments/equipment repair, completes training and updates as required by protocols.
  • Assists in keeping handouts, pamphlets, and information sheets copied and on hand in an orderly, organized fashion for provider distribution or patient reference.
  • Helps assure adequate coverage is in place and/or temporary nursing help has been obtained prior to vacations/time off.
  • Gives consideration to time off requests coordinating with physician’s schedules whenever possible.
  • Addresses any concerns with Clinic Director.
  • Employs quality control/assurance standards to provide the highest quality of care to Phillips County Medical Clinic patients.
  • Helps maintain accounting for non-reimbursable injections per rural health clinic regulations as well as following rural health clinic protocols regarding laboratory and encounter policies as directed by Clinic Director.
  • Participates in Quality Improvement Activities and Initiatives as requested by Clinic Director.
  • Keeps abreast of OSHA rules and regulations, hazardous waste disposal, sharps containers as required by law, aware of any changes/concerns and addressing any issues with Nursing Supervisor to assure all staff compliance.
  • Accurately maintains specimen containers for drug screens as well as communication between companies in reporting of results/scheduling/transporting, etc.
  • Attends training in-services as required to meet compliance regulations.
  • Attends and is active in staff/nursing meetings as well as any in-services as requested by CNO, Clinic Director or Providers.
  • Assists front desk answering phone calls and scheduling appointments when time permits.
  • Participates in professional development activities, pharmaceutical luncheons as well as continuing medical education credits using the PCH education schedules, if possible, for licensing requirements as approved by nursing schedule and Clinic Director.
