Provides direct patient care as directed by the RN, including all activities of daily living such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, and ambulating patients. Maintains a safe and clean environment conducive to patient recovery by completing safety checks, organizing patient rooms, cleaning equipment, changing linens, and keeping hallways clear. Acquires and distributes necessary supplies and equipment, performs messenger functions, orders and charges supplies, sets up patient care equipment, and stocks patient rooms and unit supply areas. Delivers patient nourishments, fills water pitchers, and distributes mail. Performs UPMC nursing core responsibilities for nursing assistants, including point-of-care testing (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O), specimen collection, and Foley care. Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status. May apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints per physician or hospital protocol. Constructively receives feedback, identifies learning needs, and takes action to improve knowledge and performance. Demonstrates clear and effective communication with the healthcare team, understanding of cultural diversity, and commitment to workplace safety. Contributes to universal unit activities, responds to call lights and telephones, passes meal trays, and transports patients. Documents in the medical record according to procedures and completes clerical functions as needed. Complies with safety policies, including standard precautions and bloodborne pathogen exposure procedures. Responds within the scope of the nursing assistant role to emergent situations and provides one-on-one companionship/supervision as required.
