The Nursing Assistant demonstrates competency in the physical care of the patient according to AHF/unit patient care standards. This includes personal care, pre- and post-operative care, post-mortem care, assisting with ambulation and exercise, and caring for patients with infectious diseases. The role also involves accurate monitoring and documentation of patient intake/output, vital signs, and weights, promptly notifying the nurse of any abnormal findings. The Nursing Assistant is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for the patient, utilizing proper body mechanics and lift techniques. They also implement admission, transfer, and discharge procedures, assist with timely patient movement, and provide explanations of the physical environment. Effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential for establishing therapeutic relationships with patients, families, and the healthcare team, while maintaining confidentiality and demonstrating conflict resolution skills. The role requires competence in time management, prioritization, teamwork, problem-solving, critical thinking, and organization. Additionally, the Nursing Assistant participates in maintaining supplies, equipment, and unit cleanliness, and demonstrates self-growth and accountability through participation in quality assurance activities and maintaining awareness of policy changes. They are expected to demonstrate competency in complex care activities within their home units, which may include preceptor training, glucose monitoring, respiratory care, CPR, dressing changes, monitoring drainage tubes, procedure/equipment setup, and administering tube feedings. The role also contributes to achieving unit quality scores that meet or exceed hospital/national averages for nurse-sensitive quality indicators.
