About The Position

The Nursing Assistant will assist Registered Nurses (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) in performing care activities for psychiatric and long-term medical/surgical patients. Services include bedside care and assisting patients with activities of daily living such as dressing, feeding, bathing, and hygiene maintenance. These services are delivered under the guidance of Registered Nurses or Licensed Practical Nurses.

Requirements

  • Completion of a Nursing Assistant Certification program.
  • Must submit Certification as evidence of stated knowledge.
  • Successfully completed training from an approved institution recognized by the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS).
  • Successfully completed a competency evaluation.
  • Registered and in good standing with the Kentucky Nurse’s Aide Registry.
  • Completed the necessary continuing education required for the state of Kentucky.
  • Maintain Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Registered Nurses (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) in performing AIC care activities for psychiatric and long term medical/surgical AIC.
  • Assist AIC with activities of daily living, including dressing, feeding, bathing, and hygiene maintenance.
  • Assist the RN or LPN with AIC as needed.
  • Assist with respiratory care (coughing, deep breathing, etc.).
  • Assist with meals, oral fluids, and intake and output records.
  • Apply hot and cold treatments as directed and assist with ambulation and transfers as needed utilizing good body mechanics.
  • Observe drainage and empty, measure, and record output as delegated.
  • Assist with admissions and discharges, including stripping bed linen, cleaning and preparing room for new admissions.
  • Perform designated tasks for isolation patients and assist with postmortem care.
  • Report pertinent patient data in a timely manner to the medical staff, including changes in the AIC’s condition requiring assessment and/or further evaluation.
  • Communicate any changes in behavior, vital signs, or significant incidents to the Nurse Supervisor or Supervisory Clinical Nurse.
  • Follow guidelines which require confidentiality with all patient information.
  • Prepare patient care area by restocking equipment and supplies needed by physicians and nurses performing treatments or exams.
  • Assist with cleaning of medical and AIC care equipment as directed.
  • Communicate and interact frequently with adult psychiatric and medical/surgical AIC.
  • Remind AIC of call-outs and assist in the transportation of patients to call outs if necessary.
  • Check AIC vital signs and weight and document this data and pertinent observations in the AIC’s electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Place armbands on patients and monitor compliance.
  • Chart AIC care given and other data on the flowsheet in EMR.
  • Maintain sanitation of AIC care areas and observe infection control procedures and universal precautions in all instances.
  • Maintain Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification and initiate BLS in emergency situations.
  • Assist physicians and nurses with exams or treatments dealing with AIC care, including turning and positioning AIC, draping, and the use of safety restraints (e.g., safety straps, side rails, etc.) as necessary.
  • Assist with dressing changes and remove dressings at the direction of the physician.
  • Ascertain proper equipment needed, maintain clean and sterile fields, secure specimens for laboratory analysis (i.e., urine, stool, sputum, etc.), label specimens, and transport them to the laboratory.
  • All duties and tasks will be performed in accordance with Program Review.
