As a Nursing Assistant on the Medical Surgical Observation Unit, you will support high-quality patient care by assisting the RN and interdisciplinary team with daily patient care, coordination, and communication. You will be responsible for patient care support, including assisting with bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, ambulation, and therapeutic positioning. You will also obtain and document vital signs, intake/output, daily weights, and other patient data. Additionally, you will perform purposeful rounding, communicate patient needs to the RN, and assist with patient transfers, mobility, and transport using proper techniques and equipment. You will support skin integrity through repositioning and appropriate care, and assist with nutritional needs including tray setup and feeding support. In terms of patient flow and unit support, you will participate in admissions, transfers, and discharges, prepare patient rooms, and ensure proper handling of belongings. You will also ensure call lights are within reach and respond promptly, and maintain a safe, clean, and organized patient environment. Clinical tasks include collecting urine, stool, and sputum specimens using proper labeling and identification procedures, and performing point-of-care testing as required. Under RN direction, you may assist with IV removal, bladder scans, and post-mortem care. You will coordinate tests and procedures with ancillary departments, maintain knowledge of EHR and ordering systems for supplies and equipment, and process patient charges and related documentation. Facilitating communication via phone systems, paging, and hospital information systems, as well as supporting chart preparation and ensuring completeness of patient records are also key responsibilities. Clerical and administrative support includes compiling charts for admissions, transfers, discharges, and expirations, ensuring accuracy of patient demographic and registration information, and obtaining medical records for transfers to other facilities. You will also troubleshoot minor equipment issues and arrange repairs when needed. You will follow infection prevention protocols, safely handle and dispose of contaminated materials, and maintain compliance with hospital policies and safety standards. Fostering a positive and collaborative work environment and responding promptly and courteously to patient and team member requests are essential. You will communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
