The Nursing Assistant (NA) assists the Registered Nurse (RN) with the daily care of patients. This includes tasks such as bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, assisting with activity orders, and ambulation. The NA also measures and documents vital signs, intake and output, and other patient data, accurately recording information in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). They perform purposeful rounding, communicate patient needs to the RN, and assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges. The NA ensures patient call lights are within reach and answers them promptly. They collect specimens, maintain nursing area stock, clean equipment, and perform patient positioning and transporting duties. Additionally, the NA assists with nutritional needs, skin integrity, and special patient supplies. Depending on unit requirements and under RN direction, they may perform tasks like removing IVs, providing post-mortem care, and bladder scans. The NA practices infection prevention techniques, including hand hygiene and knowledge of aseptic procedures, and must demonstrate age-appropriate care knowledge.
