About The Position

Geisinger is hiring a per diem Nursing Assistant for the 5 Advanced Acute Care Medical/Oncology Unit at Geisinger Lewistown Hospital. The role performs clerical duties and direct patient care activities according to unit needs, supporting the care team’s ability to provide quality care. Patient care is provided under the direction of a licensed nurse and within the nursing assistant scope of practice, in accordance with each patient’s multidisciplinary care plan. The Nursing Assistant must meet the qualifications to care for patients in the age range served by the assigned clinical area.

The position includes assisting with activities of daily living, observing and documenting patient needs, reporting changes in condition, maintaining specimen integrity, and providing one-to-one patient safety watch when assigned. It also supports unit operations through clerical and patient-throughput tasks, order processing, test coordination, transportation, communications, supply ordering, and equipment troubleshooting. The role may transport non-controlled medications and blood products as needed.

Work is typically performed in an office environment. Employees must satisfy job-specific obligations and comply with organizational policies and procedures. Geisinger offers market-leading per diem pay rates, shift differentials of up to $3 for evening, night, and weekend shifts, and up to $40,000 in financial support to become an RN.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
• Meet the qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range served by the assigned clinical area.
• Provide care within the nursing assistant scope of practice and under the direction of a licensed nurse.

Responsibilities

• Provide patient care as directed by licensed nurses and within the nursing assistant scope of practice.
• Identify, observe, and document patients’ physical needs according to established standards.
• Report changes in patient condition to licensed personnel promptly.
• Obtain and maintain specimen integrity in accordance with policy, procedure, and physician orders.
• Assist patients with activities of daily living and fulfill designated and delegated responsibilities for ongoing care.
• Provide one-to-one patient safety watch when assigned, following established policies and procedures.
• Help troubleshoot and take corrective measures regarding care and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
• Participate actively in patient safety improvement and management programs.
• Serve as a positive preceptor and mentor for new staff and students.
• Perform clerical duties for admissions, transfers, discharges, and deaths, and facilitate patient throughput.
• Transcribe and process orders according to unit standards.
• Release and confirm ordered tests with appropriate departments.
• Coordinate patient transportation to multiple tests.
• Communicate patient-related information promptly to appropriate care team members.
• Assist with ordering supplies and communicate with food services to ensure appropriate patient diets.
• Operate and troubleshoot clerical equipment and arrange maintenance for computers, fax machines, phones, and related equipment.
• Obtain and communicate electronic information relevant to the nursing unit.
• Transport non-controlled medications to and from Pharmacy and within the unit as needed.
• Transport blood products to and from the Blood Bank as needed.
