About The Position

This position provides direct patient care as directed by the RN, including all activities of daily living such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, and ambulating patients. The Nursing Assistant maintains an environment conducive to patient safety and recovery by completing safety checks, keeping patient rooms clean and organized, cleaning equipment, changing linens, emptying linen hampers, and keeping hallways clear of equipment. They also acquire and distribute supplies and equipment, perform messenger functions, order and charge/credit supplies, set up patient care equipment, and stock patient rooms and unit supply areas. Additionally, they deliver patient nourishments, fill water pitchers, and distribute patient mail. The role involves responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients. Documentation in the medical record is required according to established procedures, along with completing clerical functions as needed. The Nursing Assistant must comply with safety policies and procedures, including standard precautions and policies for bloodborne pathogen exposure. Access to medications is limited to distribution to the nurse. The role requires strict adherence to all policies and practices relative to patient care and hospital-related information, and responding within the scope of the nursing assistant role to emergent situations. Companionship and one-on-one supervision of patients may also be required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Successful completion of UPMC nursing assistant training program.
  • Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques.
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients).
  • Performs point of care testing (inc. blood glucose), weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication.
  • Performs Hospital-Acquired Condition (HAC) & patient safety indicator prevention.
  • Performs urine specimen collection, restraint placement and removal, and ticket to ride (intra-hospital transportation).
  • Maintains an environment conducive to patient safety and recovery including completing safety checks, keeping rooms clean and organized, cleaning equipment, changing linens, emptying linen hampers, and keeping hallways clear.
  • Acquires and distributes supplies and equipment, performs messenger functions, orders/charges/credits supplies, sets up patient care equipment, and stocks patient rooms and unit supply areas.
  • Delivers patient nourishments, fills water pitchers, and distributes patient mail.
  • Assures equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department.
  • Contributes to universal unit activities including responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays and transporting patients.
  • Documents in the medical record according to established procedures.
  • Completes clerical functions as needed by department.
  • Complies with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions and understands policies and procedures for bloodborne pathogen exposure.
  • Provides companionship/supervision one on one with patients as required.
  • Constructively receives feedback and direction.
