The Nursing Assistant demonstrates competency in the physical care of the patient according to AHF/unit patient care standards. This includes personal care, pre- and post-operative care, post-mortem care, assisting with ambulation and exercise, and proper positioning of patients. The role also involves accurately performing and documenting vital signs, intake/output, and weights, as well as computerized charting. The Nursing Assistant is responsible for promptly notifying the nurse of any abnormal findings and assisting in identifying and preventing falls. Maintaining a clean, safe, and comfortable environment, utilizing proper body mechanics, and performing glucose monitoring are also key duties. The position implements admission, transfer, and discharge procedures, ensuring timely communication and accurate documentation. Effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential for establishing therapeutic relationships and maintaining confidentiality. The role requires competence in time management, teamwork, problem-solving, critical thinking, and organization. The Nursing Assistant participates in maintaining supplies, equipment, and unit cleanliness, and demonstrates self-growth and accountability through quality assurance activities and compliance with unit expectations. Competency in complex care activities, including preceptor training, respiratory care, CPR, dressing changes, and tube feeding administration, is also required. The role contributes to achieving unit quality scores that meet or exceed hospital/national averages for nurse-sensitive quality indicators.
