The Nursing Assistant (NA) assists the Registered Nurse (RN) with the daily care of patients, including bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, activity orders, and ambulation. This role involves measuring and documenting vital signs, intake and output, and patient data in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). The NA performs purposeful rounding, participates in patient admission, transfer, and discharge processes, and ensures patient call lights are within reach and answered promptly. Responsibilities also include collecting specimens, maintaining nursing area stock, cleaning equipment, and performing patient positioning and transporting duties. The NA assists with nutritional needs, skin integrity, and ensures special patient supplies are provided. Depending on site/unit requirements and under RN direction, the NA may perform tasks such as IV/urinary catheter removal, simple wound dressing changes, tele tech cross-training, post-mortem care, phlebotomy, ECGs, and bladder scans, all within state regulations. The role requires adherence to infection prevention policies, including hand hygiene and aseptic procedures. Additionally, the NA may serve as a resource, be trained as a Preceptor, assist with orientation materials, identify and implement process improvements, participate in work teams or committees, assist with scheduling, and participate in shared governance. The position requires demonstrating knowledge and skills for age-appropriate patient care, understanding growth and development principles, and assessing patient status based on age-specific needs.
