The Nursing Assistant assists the Registered Nurse (RN) with the daily care of patients, including bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, and ambulation. This role involves measuring and documenting vital signs, intake and output, and patient data in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). The Nursing Assistant also performs purposeful rounding, participates in patient admission, transfer, and discharge processes, and ensures patient call lights are always within reach and answered promptly. Responsibilities include collecting specimens, performing point-of-care testing, completing errands, maintaining stock for the nursing area, and cleaning equipment and work areas. The role requires performing patient positioning and transporting duties, assisting with nutritional needs and skin integrity, and ensuring special patient supplies are provided. Depending on unit requirements and under RN direction, tasks may include removing IVs, providing post-mortem care, and performing bladder scans. The Nursing Assistant must practice infection prevention, including hand hygiene and knowledge of sterile/aseptic procedures, and demonstrate age-appropriate care skills.
