About The Position

University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a Nursing Assistant to perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses. This role involves utilizing Tele-sitter software for visual observation and verbal redirection of patients via a digital 2-way audio device. The Nursing Assistant is responsible for immediately summoning nursing staff if a patient requires assistance, demonstrating knowledge and skills appropriate for the patient population, and participating in patient information hand-offs. They will arrange meal breaks with the nurse, inform the nurse before leaving the monitoring station, and provide patient explanations without counseling or offering opinions. The position requires demonstrating behaviors in line with Service Excellence, seeking help when a patient poses a threat, participating in identifying and reporting patient safety issues, and assuring patient environment safety. This includes seeking assistance with potential safety hazards and reporting findings to the Charge Nurse. The role also emphasizes safe work practices, communication with patients and staff, implementing the plan of care under RN direction, observing patients for changes, assembling equipment, performing simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, performing computer functions, implementing measures to prevent complications, maintaining patient privacy, practicing standard precautions, assisting staff during emergencies, and performing other assigned tasks. Participation in unit staff meetings, in-services, and annual competency reviews is expected, along with incorporating Service Leadership principles and adhering to UI Health Care policies regarding personal conduct, leadership, responsiveness, appearance, attendance, and punctuality.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates understanding and proficiency of the use of the Tele-sitter software
  • Maintains visual observation at all times
  • Verbally redirects patient over digital 2-way audio device that is in patient room
  • Immediately summons the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide the appropriate care to the patient population based on the patients individualized treatment plan as delegated by the RN
  • Participates in hand-off of pertinent information/behavior about assigned patients when arriving on unit and upon completion of shift assignment
  • Arranges meal break times with nurse and informs nurse prior to leaving monitoring station for any reason so that relief may be provided to ensure constant patient observation
  • Provides patient with explanations as necessary, but does not counsel or provide opinions
  • Demonstrates behaviors in line with Service Excellence
  • Seeks help or advice as soon as possible when patient appears to pose a threat to themselves or others
  • Participates in a collaborative identification and reporting of patient safety issues
  • Assures patient environment safety
  • Seeks assistance with removal of any potential safety hazard from room and reports findings to Charge Nurse
  • Demonstrates safe work practices and attitudes, follows safety rules, works to prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors, and participates in organizational and department safety programs
  • Communicates and interacts with patients, visitors, and other health care professionals in an effective manner and maintains positive, cooperative relationships
  • Implements the plan of care under the direction of the registered nurse, providing appropriate care with regard to patient’s condition and age
  • Observes patients for changes in physical condition throughout their stay, and reports to registered nurse
  • Assembles equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by nurses or physicians
  • Performs simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as assigned (i.e. enemas, collecting specimens, preoperative preparation of skin)
  • Performs computer functions within scope of role as defined by the individual unit
  • Implements measures to prevent potential patient problems/complications and reports unusual incidents in consultation with the registered nurse
  • Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality
  • Practices standard precautions in infection control in accordance with institutional policy
  • Assists staff during emergencies, within the scope of practice
  • Performs other projects and tasks as assigned
  • Participates in unit staff meetings and in-services
  • Complies with annual competency review guidelines
  • Incorporates the principles of Service Leadership to ensure positive patient/customer relations
  • Adheres to UI Health Care policies regarding personal conduct, including: follows established leadership, remaining responsive to instruction and coaching from supervisors and meeting the standards of personal appearance, attendance and punctuality
