About The Position

This is a full-time Nursing Assistant position in Inpatient Behavioral Health at Navicent Health Medical Center, working 36 hours per week on a night shift (7a-7p). The role involves providing direct patient care according to unit standards, including personal care, pre/post-operative care, assisting with ambulation, and maintaining a safe environment. The Nursing Assistant will also be responsible for accurate documentation of vital signs, intake/output, and assisting with admission, transfer, and discharge procedures. Effective communication, teamwork, and time management skills are essential. The position also requires participation in maintaining unit supplies and cleanliness, and contributing to quality improvement initiatives. The role may involve complex care activities and serving as a preceptor after completing training. The Nursing Assistant will assist in achieving unit quality scores related to patient care indicators.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED
• Ability to communicate with patients, staff, and coworkers.
• Spends much of the day walking and standing on tile or carpet, bending, stooping, and sitting.
• Must be able to use visual near and distance acuity.
• Must have verbal ability to communicate in person and over the phone or radio.
• Must be able to assist co-workers in transfers and transport supplies, patients/residents, or equipment using good body mechanics.
• Must have functional range of motion of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spines, upper and lower extremities with a grip strength of 60-80 pounds.
• Must be able to forward reach, overhead reach, bend, squat, kneel and change from one position to the other rapidly.
• Must be able to lift 25-60 lbs. and carry 25-50 pounds.
• Must be able to tolerate high noise, busy atmospheres and noxious odors.

Nice To Haves

• BLS
• CPI
• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.
• One year of experience taking care of patients and dealing with the public preferred.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates competency in the physical care of the patient according to AHF/unit patient care standards, including personal care, pre- and post-op/procedure care, post-mortem care, patient in restraints, placement of electrodes for monitoring, assisting with ambulation and exercise, care for patients with infectious diseases, correct positioning, transfer of patient, and transportation of patients.
• Demonstrates competency in skin care protocols and care.
• Accurately performs/documents intake/output, vital signs, weights and other monitoring, including computerized charting.
• Promptly notifies nurse of abnormal vital signs, observations, physical complaints, etc.
• Assist in identifying patients at risk for falls and preventing falls.
• Maintain a clean, safe and comfortable environment for the patient, including correct handling of body fluids and appropriate cleaning of equipment between patients.
• Demonstrates utilization of proper body mechanics and appropriate lift techniques/ resources.
• Performs glucose monitoring via fingerstick.
• Implements admission, transfer and discharge procedures, according to AHF/unit standards, including assisting with timely procedures, providing explanations of the environment, accurately recording information, collecting and forwarding personal belongings, assuring unused equipment is cleaned/removed, and utilizing discharge process for transfers.
• Utilizes effective communication and interpersonal skills, assuring timely and appropriate communication of patient/family issues, establishing therapeutic relationships, utilizing appropriate lines of authority, maintaining confidentiality, demonstrating effective conflict resolution skills, and demonstrating awareness of satisfaction issues.
• Demonstrates competence in time management and prioritization, teamwork, problem solving and critical thinking, organization of work and environment, and timely response to patient/nurse needs and requests.
• Participates in maintaining supplies, equipment and unit cleanliness, including maintaining a neat appearance of patient areas, restocking supplies, reporting broken equipment, ensuring appropriate charges are made, properly handling/storing/cleaning equipment, and efficiently using supplies.
• Demonstrates self-growth/accountability by participating in quality assurance and PI activities, attending unit meetings, maintaining awareness of policy changes, verbalizing how job supports organizational goals, demonstrating cultural commitments, assuring competency maintenance, and complying with unit-specific expectations.
• Demonstrates competency in all required complex care activities within their home units, which may include preceptor training, glucose monitoring, respiratory care, CPR training, dressing changes, monitoring drainage tubes, procedure/equipment set-up, and administering tube feedings.
• Assists in achieving unit quality scores which meet or exceed hospital/national average for nurse-sensitive quality indicators.
