About The Position

Under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, the Nursing Assistant helps deliver patient care. Duties include personal care such as feeding, bathing, dressing, grooming, moving and transporting patients, and changing linens. The role collects and documents vital signs and other patient observations, reports significant changes or results outside normal limits to the RN, and contributes to a safe environment for patients, visitors, and employees.

This position is in the Observation Unit and is scheduled for 32 hours per week, with an 8-hour day/evening shift and an every-other-weekend rotation. It is a .8 FTE position (64 hours per two-week pay period).

Requirements

• Meet one of the following age requirements: at least 18 years old, or 17 years old with a high school diploma or GED.
• Meet one of the following patient-care preparation requirements: successful completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program; completion of one semester of clinical rotations in an accredited nursing program; completion of the Allina Health Nursing Assistant Academy Program; or previous direct patient care experience.
• Meet one of the following BLS requirements: current certification from the American Heart Association; current certification from the American Red Cross; or completion of Allina in-house BLS training within 30 days of hire.
• Ability to perform medium work, lifting up to 32 pounds occasionally and up to 25 pounds frequently.

Responsibilities

• Perform assigned personal care and interventions according to the critical elements of each procedure.
• Respond promptly to patient call lights for assigned and other patients.
• Distribute and set up water, snacks, and patient trays, and assist patients with them.
• Assist with grooming and hygiene, skin integrity, personal comfort, and population-specific patient needs.
• Assist with ambulation, transfers, positioning, and range of motion according to activity orders and patient needs.
• Carry out fall-prevention activities specified in the plan of care.
• Collect and save specimens.
• Assist the RN with admissions, transfers, discharges, and post-mortem care.
• May transport medications within the site, excluding controlled substances.
• Observe, collect, and document patient health-status data, including measurements such as temperature, radial pulse, blood pressure, respirations, weight, and intake and output, as assigned.
• Immediately report observations or health-status data outside normal limits or significant changes to the RN.
• Document according to documentation guidelines.
• Protect patients, self, and others from injury during transfers, lifts, and transports by using proper equipment and body mechanics.
• Report environmental risks and equipment malfunctions to a supervisor.
• Use equipment according to policies, procedures, and manufacturer directions or standards.
• May handle hazardous waste, including identifying, segregating, and disposing of it; ensuring container integrity; and knowing emergency response procedures for spills, fires, and evacuations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
