About The Position

Under the supervision of the Clinical Educator, the Nursing Assistant Trainee will provide general nursing care in Acute Care/Long Term Care to non-acute and/or acutely ill patients/residents while maintaining a safe and clean environment. This role requires the ability to react calmly and make sound judgments within the scope of duties when caring for ill patients/residents and in emergency situations. The job involves regular use of a Hoyer lift for non-ambulatory patients/residents and requires a caring attitude when dealing with patients/residents and families. The pace is rapid with constant pressure to complete assignments and respond to call lights. The trainee must maintain accountability for all actions and accept delegation from the supervising Registered Nurse. This position is covered under the Indian Child Protection Act. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • No experience required.
  • Must be able to follow instructions and demonstrate relevant scope of practice when caring for patients/residents by maintaining a safe environment with appropriate infection controls practices.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge of proper equipment use.
  • Demonstrates knowledge between normal and abnormal patient/resident findings and communicates them appropriately to the nurse on duty.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Competently maintains a clean work environment with proper infection control practices including equipment cleaning.
  • Provides general nursing care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others by establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships with patients, residents, visitors, and other healthcare team members.
  • Assures confidentiality of patient/resident information at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in SEARHC’s Student Nursing Assistant program, while maintaining satisfactory performance and good attendance, as outlined in the program syllabus.
  • Promote the SEARHC Seven Standards of Excellence.
  • Provide nursing care for the adult and geriatric population, which may include performing bed baths, oral hygiene, hair care, back care, dressing patients/residents, and applying treatments for heat and cold; application of anti-embolism stockings.
  • Obtain and record temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, height, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, and intake-output measurements in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Collect and transport specimens to correct departments.
  • Report any abnormal vital signs and/or changes observed in the condition or behavior of patients/residents and unusual incidents.
  • Perform other duties as specific to unit specialty.
  • Provide bedside care, which may include repositioning patients/residents, lifting and turning patients/residents, assisting in the use of bedpan, urinal, commode, or emptying of Foley catheter; answering call lights; making rounds to assigned patients/residents.
  • Ambulating patients/residents, transporting to and from various departments as required.
  • Assisting patients/residents with meals or feeding patients/residents.
  • Assisting patients/residents in the care of personal belongings, which may include dentures, glasses, contact lenses, hearing aids, prosthetic devices, etc.
  • Changing bed linen; cleaning over bed table and bedside stand, straightening room and other general care as needed.
  • Assisting Registered Nurse with readying a patient/resident for medivac transport from the department, which may include making phone calls, copying papers and chart, and providing direct patient care.
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment by preparing nursing areas and/or patient/resident rooms and beds for receiving patient/resident admissions, transfers, emergencies, or discharges.
  • Assisting in and cleaning utility rooms, cleaning and preparing equipment for disinfection or sterilization; reporting equipment that is out of order, reporting other problems to Registered Nurse.
  • Handling clean and dirty linen and storing supplies in the service area as appropriately instructed.
  • Floating as needed to other departments in the hospital under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Disposing of all solid and infectious waste according to organizational policies and procedures.
  • Replenishing supplies in patient/resident rooms and bathrooms as needed.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by Registered Nurse.
