About The Position

This is a full-time position for a Nursing Assistant/Patient Care Technician on the UPMC Presbyterian Adult Acute Care (12S) unit. The role involves providing high-quality patient care and supporting department services. The unit is a 30-bed acuity adaptable General Medicine Unit with a diverse patient population, including hepatology, urology, endocrinology, post-surgical complications, pulmonary, and infectious disease cases. This teaching unit is ideal for those seeking inpatient experience and to expand clinical knowledge, with daily multidisciplinary bedside rounds and collaboration with discharge planning. Title and salary will be determined by education and patient care experience.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of UPMC nursing assistant or EIC training program or Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class.
  • Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.
  • For Patient Care Technician: 1 year of healthcare experience, OR completion of at least one clinical rotation as part of a nursing or PT/OT/PA program or related health care training, OR completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in a health sciences field.
  • For Patient Care Technician – Senior: 2 years of healthcare experience, OR 1 year of experience plus completion of at least one clinical rotation as part of a nursing or PT/OT/PA program or related health care training, OR 1 year of experience and completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.
  • Annual completion of a professional contribution to be determined after hire.
  • Successful completion of Senior training class.

Responsibilities

  • Provide routine patient care and support department services in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Assist nurses and/or physicians to ensure the highest degree of quality patient care.
  • Perform ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients, and blood glucose).
  • Monitor vital signs.
  • Perform simple dressings.
  • Conduct EKGs.
  • Perform bladder scans.
  • Collect all specimens.
