The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in Surgical Care at Sherman Hospital, working Full-Time on Days, will assist the Registered Nurse (RN) with the daily care of patients. This includes tasks such as bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, assisting with activity orders and ambulation, which may involve therapeutic assistive devices, proper positioning, range of motion exercises, and special transferring techniques. The role also involves measuring and documenting vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration), intake and output, daily weights, and other patient data. Accurate documentation in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) is essential. The CNA will perform purposeful rounding under the direction of the RN, promptly communicating patient and family observations, concerns, and needs. They will participate in the admission, transfer, and discharge process, including room setup, patient orientation, linen management, and handling patient belongings. Ensuring the patient call light is always within reach and responding promptly to calls is a key responsibility. The position requires collecting various specimens (urine, stool, sputum) and performing point-of-care testing, ensuring accurate labeling and identification. The CNA will also complete errands, maintain and order stock for the nursing area, and clean equipment and work areas. Patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling with proper technique and assistive devices, are part of the role. Tasks related to nutritional needs, such as diet review, tray setup/removal, and assisting with diet selection, will be performed under RN direction. Maintaining skin integrity through proper repositioning and skin care is also a responsibility. The CNA will ensure special patient supplies and appliances are provided and maintained. Depending on site/unit requirements and under RN direction, duties may include removing IVs, providing post-mortem care, and performing bladder scans. Practicing infection prevention policies, including hand hygiene, knowledge of sterile and aseptic procedures, proper disposal of contaminated materials, and appropriate attire for patient contact, is mandatory. The role requires demonstrating knowledge and skills for age-appropriate patient care, understanding principles of growth and development, and assessing patient status based on age-specific needs.
