About The Position

The 12S unit is a 24-bed solid tumor, palliative, and hospice care unit at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center. It is one of the few designated inpatient oncology units qualified to deliver multiple forms of chemotherapy in Wisconsin. As a quaternary hospital, it provides specialized oncology care to highly acute cancer patients from across the nation and world. The 12T unit is a 24-bed Oncology and Autologous Stem Cell Transplant floor, primarily serving patients with blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, along with other blood/autoimmune diseases. Chemotherapy and Stem Cell Treatments are administered on this unit, which remains fully masked due to immunocompromised patients.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate, GED or HSED
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 45 days
  • Nurse Aide in good standing as indicated with the State Registry in which the team member practices.

Responsibilities

  • Monitoring Vital Signs: Regularly check and record blood pressure, temperature, respiratory rate, and oxygen levels. Report any abnormalities to the nursing staff.
  • Testing the pH level in urine after patients receive certain medications.
  • Personal Care Assistance: Help patients with bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting. Assist with feeding and hydration, especially for patients who are too weak to eat independently.
  • Mobility Support: Aid patients moving around the unit, including transfers from bed to wheelchair. Turn and reposition bedridden patients to prevent bedsores.
  • Transporting Patients: Escort patients to other departments for tests, treatments, or procedures.
  • Cleaning and Sterilization: Maintain a sterile environment due to the immunocompromised nature of many oncology patients. Clean rooms, change linens, and sanitize equipment. Administering CHG treatments before patient procedures, helping to prevent infections that could enter the bloodstream through central lines, ports and PICCs.
  • Inventory Management: Keep track of medical supplies, linens, and personal care items. Ensure all equipment is clean and ready for use.
  • Emotional and Psychological Support: Offer comfort and companionship to patients, helping them cope with emotional challenges such as fear, anxiety, and depression.
  • Documentation and Communication: Record patient observations and report changes in condition to nurses. Assist with admission and discharge processes, including gathering patient history.
  • Special Considerations: Be trained in neutropenic precautions and chemotherapy safety protocols. Be vigilant for symptoms like pain, nausea, and fatigue, and respond quickly to changes.
