About The Position

The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in assisted living. The NA provides resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned resident under the supervision of a charge nurse. This role involves providing assistance with basic health care needs including daily living activities such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing, obtaining and recording vital signs, and providing psychosocial support and other personal care. Depending on the location, responsibilities may extend to assisting residents with transfers, repositioning, walking, and range of motion exercises. The NA also plays a role in food preparation and dining services, assisting residents with meals and ensuring a positive dining experience. In some locations, the NA may assist providers and nursing staff with procedures, collect specimens, and gather vital signs. There is also a possibility of administering prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse, within the scope of practice defined by state regulations. Documentation of resident care outcomes, medication administration, behavior, activity, and dietary intake is crucial. The NA must communicate any changes in resident condition, medication follow-up, or care-related concerns to the charge nurse. Depending on the location, housekeeping and laundry services may also be part of the role to maintain clean living areas. The NA assists with and documents participation in wellness and recreational programs, encouraging resident engagement. The role requires delivering age-appropriate care based on the physical and psychological needs of the resident, as outlined in the care/service plan. Knowledge of providing care to tenants with dementia may be required depending on the location. As a member of the nursing team, the NA is expected to adhere to infection prevention and control policies and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment. The nursing department operates 24 hours a day, and employment may involve working any of these hours, potentially with varying shifts based on staffing and resident census. This includes working rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. Specific shift assignments are determined by the nursing area and location. Committee meeting attendance may be required. Employees may also be asked to provide direction to students when they are providing resident care as part of their training.

Requirements

Minimum age of 16.
Required Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing.
Satisfactorily completes yearly department specific competency testing and maintains a record of continuing education credits for each year.
A minimum of 12 hours continuing education are required annually.
Maintains all department specific required certifications.
When applicable, for applicable states, certified and registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry.
Dependent on facility and required responsibilities, this role may classify as a Sanford Category II Driver requiring a motor vehicle report and proof of valid driver’s license.
Must be medically qualified to perform the essential driving functions of this position as per our Sanford Driving Policy per the leaders request.

Nice To Haves

High school graduate or general equivalency diploma (GED) preferred, but not required.
Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in assisted living preferred.

Responsibilities

Provides assistance with basic health care needs including daily living activities that may include, but are not limited to, bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing, obtaining and recording vital signs, and providing psychosocial support and other personal care to assigned resident.
Assists the resident in transferring, repositioning, and walking using correct and appropriate transfer techniques and equipment and also provides range of motion and passive exercises.
Completes tasks related to food preparation and dining, while creating a positive dining experience for the resident.
Assists residents with meals and snacks, provides water and supplements as appropriate.
Aids providers and nursing staff members with procedures and/or collect non-invasive body fluid specimens and gather vital signs.
Administers prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse and within their scope of practice as defined by state regulations.
Documents the outcomes related to resident care, medication administration, behavior, activity, and dietary.
Communicates changing condition, medication follow-up and care related concerns/responses to the charge nurse.
Provides housekeeping and laundry services to assist residents with keeping living areas clean and operational.
Provides assistance and documentation with wellness and recreational programs and encourages residents to participate.
Delivers age-appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident as per care/service plan.
Provides care to tenants with dementia.
Follows infection prevention and control policies and Personal Protective Equipment use.
Works rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
Provides direction to students when they are providing resident care as part of their training.
