About The Position

Nebraska Methodist Health System is seeking a Nursing Assistant for Cancer Services. This is a casual/PRN position with typical shift coverage from 7a-3p, Monday-Friday. Casual/PRN employees work on an ‘as needed’ basis to meet business needs, with work days/hours varying weekly. The role involves preparing exam rooms and equipment, scheduling appointments and procedures, providing patient instructions, and ensuring an efficient, patient-friendly workflow to deliver quality care.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) required.
  • Completion of the 75 or 120 hour Nurse Aide/Nurse Assistant program and active on the Nebraska DHHS Nurse Aide Registry or Iowa Direct Care Worker Registry, OR completion of two (2) semesters of clinical practice in an accredited nursing program, OR Medical Assistant diploma from an accredited program required.
  • Participates in mandatory in-services and continuing education programs as mandated by policies and procedures/external agencies and as directed by supervisor.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred at time of hire, required within 3 months of hire.
  • Pleasant personality and courteous manner imperative.
  • Ability to work under stress and distractions.

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years college preferred.
  • Previous Medical Assistant/surgery scheduling experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares exam rooms and medical equipment according to physician protocol.
  • Prepares exam room and equipment at the beginning, in-between patients, and at the end of the clinic day, ensuring timely room turnover.
  • Independently manages all ordering, stocking, and supplying of medical supplies for the clinic, corresponding with relevant departments.
  • Independently manages all equipment sterilization needs for the department, ensuring timely return of equipment.
  • Maintains work areas to ensure healthy environment conditions by stocking, cleaning, and organizing equipment and rooms.
  • Prepares patient for provider exam by updating medical records, checking vital signs, obtaining relevant medical information, and documenting tests/procedures in Cerner.
  • Brings patients back and prepares them for exam following physician protocol.
  • Obtains accurate patient history, vitals, and other information, and relays it to the physician/provider.
  • Stays in room during exam to document information as directed by the provider.
  • Obtains practitioner-requested tests, records, and lab work.
  • Covers front desk requirements as needed, including answering phones, assisting with intake, scheduling, and managing medical records.
  • Performs telephone triage to determine patient needs by recording and reporting patient condition to the provider and advising the patient based on provider instructions.
  • Handles prescription renewal/inquiries by discussing pharmacy questions with providers and relaying information to the pharmacy.
  • Provides patient and family education material and recommends appropriate community resources at the direction of the physician.
  • Schedules patients for surgery/diagnostic testing by receiving information from providers, coordinating patient, insurance, and hospital schedules.
  • Maintains doctor's surgery/office schedules by calculating necessary surgery room time and turnaround time.
  • Handles surgery/diagnostic testing process by providing information for patient pre-certification and registry, and notifying the patient of surgery/diagnostic time and location and preparatory information.
  • Schedules all preoperative testing and physicals, ensuring all preoperative information is completed and within normal limits, and reporting any abnormal testing to the surgeon.
  • Confirms and documents all surgery instructions with the patient.
  • Notifies consulting and referring physicians of procedures.
  • Assists providers with patient treatment, such as office biopsies and aspirations, handling of samples, requisitions, and documenting according to standard procedures.
  • Performs and documents quality control activities.
  • Assists physician in office biopsies and aspirations, including setting up and using sterile equipment and properly documenting specimens.
  • Cleans and disinfects procedure rooms according to standard procedures.
  • Uses time out procedure as required by the hospital.
  • Ensures specimens are delivered to the pathology department in a timely manner.
  • Enters and maintains a patient database that tracks individual patients and their personal history staging information.
  • Enters and maintains database for noninvasive breast cancer patients, including compliance with NCCN guidelines.
  • Enters and maintains database for invasive breast cancer patients, including compliance with NCCN guidelines.
  • Serves as a member of the Breast Leadership Program, attending meetings and assisting in maintaining NAPBC accreditation.
  • Compiles, enters, and maintains survivorship database, including compliance with NCCN and NAPBC guidelines, and distributes and reviews with patients.
