About The Position

The Nursing Apprentice I (NA1) - Acute Care - Surgical/Trauma position is for a mission-driven individual to join the Denver Health team. The 4B Med/Surg Surgical Trauma Telemetry Unit is a fast-paced, high acuity unit specializing in trauma, bariatrics, gender confirming care, and general thoracic surgeries, also handling overflow general medicine patients. This 30-bed unit requires exceptional critical thinking skills with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5 and CNA to patient ratio of 1:10. The Nursing Apprentice role allows nursing students to enhance clinical skills in a hospital setting while enrolled in an ADN or BSN program, adhering to ANA standards and the Theory of Human Caring and Caritas.

Requirements

  • Must have successfully completed Med/Surg 1 at time of application with the ability to provide transcript with grade.
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to ensure confidentiality of patient information by creating and maintaining a secure and trusting environment by not sharing information learned on the job, except when necessary in the performance of the job responsibilities or to improve a patient’s care.
  • Ability to ensure all duties, responsibilities and competencies are conducted in a manner that is effective and appropriate to patients/clients to who care/service is being provided.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and applicability of the principles of growth and development over the life span, as well as demonstrating the ability to assess data reflecting the patient’s status and interpreting appropriate cultural information of the patient(s) to whom care/ services is being delivered/provided.
  • Ability to complete and maintain clinical competency standards.
  • Familiarity with EHR Documentation

Responsibilities

  • Performs basic patient care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN, including but not limited to, monitoring vital signs, taking blood glucose measurements, and recording intake and output.
  • Assists patients with tending to personal care and activities of daily living, including but not limited to, bathing, grooming and eating.
  • Reports abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to nursing staff.
  • Assists with keeping unit(s) and patient rooms stocked, clean, and orderly.
  • Develop specific clinical nurse skills through observation of experts and supervised, hands-on experience.
  • Documentation that complies with clinical guidelines.
  • Partners with interprofessional team on healthcare consumer throughput by proactively solving problems related to capacity and healthcare consumer flow.
  • Collaborates with interprofessional teams to incorporate Lean principles for quality improvement initiatives.
