About The Position

Grow your career while helping care for and maintain plants, trees, and landscapes throughout O'ahu. The Department of Parks and Recreation, Urban Forestry Division, Horticulture Services, is hiring for the following positions: Nursery Aid - Kapiolani Nursery, Honolulu (1 vacancy) Nursery Worker I - Opening anticipated; location to be determined. Nursery Aid (BC-03) Care for, water, fertilize, prune, weed, and maintain trees, shrubs, flowers, and other plants. Assist with plant propagation by preparing planting media, potting and transplanting seedlings, and caring for newly established plants. Prepare planting areas, install and maintain landscape beautification projects, and maintain nursery and tree farm inventories. Operate and perform routine maintenance on landscaping equipment, hand tools, and light vehicles. Help maintain nursery grounds and surrounding landscaped areas in a safe and orderly condition. Nursery Worker I (BC-05) Propagate, cultivate, fertilize, prune, and maintain a variety of trees, shrubs, flowers, and other plants. Prepare planting media, perform grafting, transplanting, seedling propagation, and related nursery operations. Install and maintain landscape beautification projects and care for nursery, tree farm, botanical garden, and public landscape plantings. Monitor plant health and assist in controlling plant diseases, insects, and pests using approved methods. Operate landscaping equipment and light vehicles and assist with transporting plants, materials, and supplies.

Requirements

Some experience and/or training in the care and cultivation of plants (for Nursery Aid).
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in the care and cultivation of plants, including the propagation of various plants (for Nursery Worker I).
Knowledge of general horticultural practices and techniques used in the care and cultivation of plants, shrubs, trees, flowers, and lawn.
Knowledge of common plant pests and insects.
Knowledge of the growing characteristics and habits of various plant life.
Knowledge of use and care of grounds keeping and gardening tools and equipment.
Ability to read, understand, and apply written instructions and guidelines regarding work schedules and assignments, safety practices and departmental directives.
Ability to pot and re-pot plants and do basic propagation work.
Ability to learn the names of and identify common plants and trees.
Ability to use common garden tools and equipment.
Knowledge of a variety of trees and plants, their care and propagation.
Knowledge of practices, tools, equipment and materials used in nursery work.
Knowledge of plant diseases and pests and effective methods of controlling them.
Knowledge of various commercial fertilizers and their use.
Ability to do grafting, air-layering and seed germination.
Ability to identify various plants.
Ability to recognize common plant diseases, insects and pests.
Ability to use common tools and equipment used in nursery work.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Valid driver's license (Type 3/automobile) prior to appointment.
Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) prior to appointment.
Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) Test prior to appointment.
First Aid/CPR/AED certificates prior to completion of probation.
Forklift Certification (Class C: Internal Combustion Engine Trucks-Pneumatic Tires) prior to completion of probation.

Nice To Haves

Successful completion of the AG149 Plant Propagation course from Windward Community College or similar plant propagation coursework from a regionally-accredited college or university may substitute for the required experience.
