The Prince Surgical Critical Care Unit is a 22-bed intensive care unit specializing in the care of critically ill trauma and surgical patients. The unit also cares for geriatric rib fractures, traumatic brain injury, multi-trauma patients, and the critical care adult burn population. Surgical patients include those from trauma surgery, emergency general surgery, surgical oncology, and vascular surgery. The unit also provides care for medical and neuro critically ill patients. This role is challenging and fulfilling, supporting nurses and ancillary staff in providing care to patients requiring ventilator support, life-sustaining medications, and assisting with bedside procedures. It is a direct patient care role involving vital signs, blood sugar checks, wound care, bed bathing, toileting, ambulating, catheterization, and acting as a safety attendant. Postmortem care may also be involved.
