About The Position

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking an experienced and dynamic registered nurse to serve as dedicated Evening Nurse Supervisor for the safe and effective provision of nursing care. The Registered Nurse IV Evening Supervisor provides direct and indirect supervision over care and treatment of patients from the community, DPH, DOC, DMH, and DDS in accordance with hospital policies and practices on evening shift. The incumbent coordinates intra and interdepartmental activities and performs related duties as directed.

Requirements

  • Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
  • Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
  • Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.
  • Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory abilities.
  • Clear, professional communication and accurate reporting.
  • Ability to motivate staff and remain calm under pressure.
  • Experience leading performance improvement programs per Joint Commission standards.
  • Proficiency in CPR and advanced life-saving measures.
  • Skilled in observation, interviews, and record analysis.
  • Sound judgment in decision-making.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, and agency policies.
  • Ability to implement interventions for special client populations.
  • Understanding of supervisory principles and practices.
  • Capacity to build positive relationships across diverse social, ethnic, and economic groups.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise evening shift staff, collaborating with the Nurse Manager on performance reviews.
  • Act as a liaison for hospital services and external agencies.
  • Attend administrative meetings and communicate updates to staff.
  • Oversee staffing, authorize overtime, and oversee fiscal reporting.
  • Ensure staff participation in educational programs.
  • Address emergencies, admissions, records, equipment repair, and medical supply needs.
  • Oversee IV/Phlebotomy activities and provide culturally sensitive care.
  • Serve as a Meditech super user in the absence of the Informatics Specialist.
  • Maintain appropriate staffing levels based on census and acuity.
  • Act as patient advocate, handling complaints and logistical adjustments.
  • Assume hospital administrative duties during off shifts, including disaster response.
  • Lead medical emergencies (Code Blue/RRTs) and ensure proper documentation.
  • Apply collective bargaining policies related to staffing.
