About The Position

The School Nurse Supervisor provides leadership and oversight (onsite & offsite) for a team of school nurses to ensure the delivery of high-quality health services to students. This position is responsible for supervising staff, coordinating school health programs, ensuring compliance with state and local health regulations, and collaborating with school leadership, families, and community partners to promote student health and academic success. The Nurse Supervisor also supports professional development, monitors performance, and helps implement evidence-based practices to improve student health outcomes. All Registered Nurses employed by the Mecklenburg County Health Department are Public Health Nurses. Public Health Nurses, regardless of official title or classification, may provide nursing services during urgent and/or emergent public health events. These services include, but are not limited to, administration of immunizations for various ages and groups, mass medication distribution, and provision of health services in shelter environments.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five years of nursing experience in area directly related to area of assignment.
  • Graduate from an accredited/approved nursing education program.
  • BSN is required for School Health Nurse Supervisor positions.
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in NC issued by the NC Board of Nursing or another Nurse Licensure Compact State - If you have a compact license issued in a state other than N. Carolina, you have 60 days to apply for a NC Nurses license, upon claiming residency in North Carolina.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED) by the American Heart Association that is valid for at least 90 days after hire.
  • Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License
  • Requires County Driving Privileges
  • Intermediate use in various computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge and ability to work with computer applications, including the internet, spreadsheet, and word processing software.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of lead nurse, charge nurse or other supervisory type experience preferred.
  • Experience in Pediatrics, Emergency Dept, etc. preferred
  • Experience in education field, teaching, etc, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain communication between governing boards, medical staff, and department heads by attending meetings and coordinating interdepartmental functioning.
  • Review and analyze facility activities and data to aid planning, risk management and to improve service utilization.
  • Establish work schedules and assignments for staff, according to workload, space, and equipment availability.
  • Maintain awareness of advances in medicine, computerized diagnostic and treatment equipment, data processing technology, government regulations, health insurance changes, and financing options.
  • Prepare activity reports to inform management of the status and implementation plans of programs, services, and quality initiatives.
  • Manages change in integrated health care delivery systems, such as work restructuring, technological innovations, and shifts in the focus of care.
  • Consult with medical, business, and community groups to discuss service problems, respond to community needs, enhance public relations, coordinate activities and plans, and promote health programs.
  • Develop instructional materials and conducts in-service and community-based educational programs.
  • Responds in cases of urgent and/or emergent events that require public health interventions. Employees may be trained for and assigned duties unrelated to their regular work; work outside normal business hours and workdays and/or in a different work location may be required. Emergency events include, but are not limited to, communicable disease outbreaks, severe weather situations (e.g. snow or ice storms, tornados, hurricanes), natural disasters (e.g. earthquakes), fire, or power outages, and acts of terrorism.
