About The Position

The Nurse Supervisor for Pediatrics Ambulatory Care provides both clinical and operational leadership for a dynamic, multispecialty pediatric outpatient practice within the Department of Pediatrics at WashU Medicine. Based primarily at St. Louis Children's Hospital, this working supervisor role oversees approximately 20-25 nurses and support staff while supporting high-quality patient care across multiple ambulatory locations, including coverage needs at CSCC West, Graham Road, and Shiloh, Illinois. The ambulatory care team supports a diverse pediatric patient population within a high-volume multispecialty outpatient environment, including Gastroenterology, Genetics, Allergy, Pulmonology, Cardiology, Endocrinology, and other pediatric specialty divisions. Clinics collectively serve approximately 200-300 patient visits per day, requiring strong organizational skills, adaptability, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced setting.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree/Diploma In Registered Nursing Or Diploma In Practical Nursing
  • Basic Life Support - American Heart Association, Basic Life Support - American Red Cross, Licensed Practical Nurse - Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Licensed Practical Nurse - Missouri Division of Professional Registration, Registered Nurse - Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Registered Nurse - Missouri Division of Professional Registration
  • Nursing (2 Years)
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program, plus a minimum of 2 years of related nursing experience.
  • Current LPN or RN licensure in the state of Missouri and/or Illinois, depending on location, in accordance with the Compact Act.
  • Basic Life Support certification (Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements).

Nice To Haves

  • Prior supervisory or team leadership experience in a clinical setting.
  • Experience navigating high-volume pediatric or ambulatory clinic operations.
  • Familiarity with Epic EHR, project management tools (e.g., Monday.com), and communication platforms (MS Outlook, Teams, Zoom).

Responsibilities

  • Supervises nursing staff, including hiring/firing responsibilities, performance appraisals for subordinates, initiating disciplinary action.
  • Coordinates patient services with physicians and staff to provide quality care in effective manner, conducting rounds to ensure quality of patient care delivery.
  • Facilitates educational opportunities and quality improvement activities for staff to ensure compliance with medical school and regulatory guidelines.
  • Assigns/coordinates activities and duties of staff orienting new staff and advising administration of conditions and performance issues.
  • Provides direct patient care as needed, including development of patient care plans, administering medication, vitals, phlebotomy, monitoring IV therapies and maintaining records in accordance with approved nursing techniques.
  • Promotes/maintains good public relations with patients and families, acting as liaison between other departments.
  • Provides appropriate counsel to patients/families explaining medications, procedures and teaches care to ensure continuity of care and promote health care maintenance.
  • Monitors supplies/equipment ordering/repairing as required.
  • Drive hiring, onboarding, coaching, performance management, and ongoing competency development for nursing and support staff.
  • Rounding with team members, operational planning, responding to staffing needs, addressing patient care concerns, and providing direct clinical support when necessary.
  • Round daily with staff, address patient care needs, step in with direct clinical support when needed, and resolve real-time operational challenges.
  • Partner with providers, clinical teams, and leadership to maintain high standards of care across all locations.
  • Reports to the Practice Office and Support Manager to build a supportive and engaged clinical team.
