About The Position

The Nurse, Registered, will implement, manage, and monitor health programs as defined by School Health Services and the Florida Nurse Practice Act. In addition, the registered nurse will oversee registered nursing students from school board approved agencies. This role involves managing assigned clerical staff and subordinate professional personnel, taking responsibility for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of assigned teams. The position requires carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the district’s policies and applicable state and federal laws, including interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems. All district employees are expected to demonstrate regular and predictable attendance, support the district’s vision, mission, goals, and Strategic Plan, engage in civility, respect, and professionalism, and maintain the professional knowledge and skills necessary to perform their duties.

Requirements

  • Implement, manage, and monitor health programs as defined by School Health Services and the Florida Nurse Practice Act.
  • Oversee registered nursing students from school board approved agencies.
  • Manage assigned clerical staff and subordinate professional personnel in one or more sections of the department.
  • Take responsibility for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of assigned teams.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the district’s policies and applicable state and federal laws.
  • Conducts nursing assessments on students with health complications or identified as high risk for developing health complications.
  • Counsels students on an individual and/or group basis in the areas of physical, emotional, and social health.
  • Monitors and reviews physician orders for students receiving medication or requiring procedures or treatments on a routine basis.
  • Ensures the proper training and adherence to district guidelines of school personnel who may be responsible for administering medications, procedures, and/or treatments.
  • Supervises licensed practical nurses, health assistants, and unlicensed assistive personnel (UAPs) as mandated by the Florida Nurse Practice Act and National Association of School Nursing (NASN).
  • Maintains health records on students in assigned schools; completes reports to fulfill the requirements of the current School Health Services Plan.
  • Plans, implements, and evaluates procedures involving health concerns and subsequent care in the school setting, including care plans and/or action plans.
  • Plans and implements in-service activities appropriate for personnel assigned to schools.
  • Provides health information and materials to students and staff.
  • Makes recommendations for the provision and/or maintenance of a healthy and safe environment for students and staff.
  • Plans, implements, and facilitates the completion of the State of Florida requirements related to screenings and immunizations in accordance with compliance deadlines.
  • Assists families with appropriate follow-up on medical concerns, the release of information for medical concerns, or suspected medical concerns; makes home visits when appropriate.
  • Serves on the child Study Team (CST), including but not limited to Individual Education Plans and 504 plans as they pertain to medical concerns.
  • Establishes and maintains communication with public and private medical professionals and agencies serving students.
  • Maintains valid state licenses, including CPR, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogen Certification by attending continuing education programs and other training activities.
  • Attends all pre- and post-planning meetings, as well as professional day trainings.
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
