About The Position

The Department of Neurology is seeking a Nurse Practitioner (NP) to support neuromuscular providers with their outpatient clinical duties at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. The NP will be responsible for performing patient-oriented functions such as interviewing patients, taking medical histories, performing physical examinations, ordering laboratory tests, coordinating the continuum of care, providing education to patients and significant others, conducting clinic sessions, and prescribing appropriate treatments. The role may also involve participation in research initiatives. Working under the direction of a physician group, the NP will coordinate patient care and facilitate efficient movement through the healthcare system. This includes screening and interviewing patients, taking medical histories, consulting with physicians and other healthcare providers, prescribing medications, providing consult services for inpatients and outpatients, and offering follow-up patient care in the clinic. The NP will also provide counseling and instruction to patients and their families, make decisions regarding patient management and treatment, initiate requests for diagnostic procedures, and participate in research projects by managing patient enrollment and documentation. Additionally, the NP will develop policies and procedures to optimize patient care and act as a liaison to nursing. Proficiency in EPIC Meditech and EPR systems is required.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Nursing
  • Registered Nurse license
  • Certified as a Nurse Practitioner
  • Licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing
  • Must maintain current licensure and certification for the duration of employment.
  • Current CPR certification required with the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

  • Additional experience may substitute for master's degree, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees personal and provider Epic in-baskets triaging appropriately.
  • Pends new medications and prescription refills in Epic for physician signature.
  • Follows up on lab and study results, notifying the physician and patient as appropriate.
  • Returns patient phone calls.
  • Prepares physicians for outpatient clinic appointments including obtaining detailed medical records for patients with complex medical histories and ensuring records are scanned into Epic.
  • Populates patient history in Epic.
  • Generates patient problem lists as requested by physicians.
  • Is aware of the inclusion/exclusion criteria for ongoing clinical trials to help identify possible research candidates.
  • Assist with preparing documents for infusion services, including pre-authorization documents for the physicians.
  • Interviews patients, takes medical histories, and performs physical examinations.
  • Orders laboratory tests and prescribes appropriate treatments.
  • Coordinates the continuum of care for patients.
  • Provides education to patients and their significant others.
  • Conducts clinic sessions.
  • Prescribes medications to patients as indicated.
  • Provides consult services for inpatients and occasionally outpatients.
  • Provides follow up patient care as needed in clinic.
  • Provides counseling and instruction to patients and their significant others regarding health conditions, therapies, and procedures.
  • Makes decisions regarding data gathering and appropriate management and treatment of patients.
  • Initiates requests for laboratory studies and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Participates in the coordination of research projects including patient enrollment and manages the associated documentation.
  • Develops policies and procedures as needed to facilitate optimal patient care and functions as a liaison to nursing.
  • Uses EPIC Meditech and EPR systems proficiently.
