About The Position

NaphCare is hiring a Nurse Practitioner to provide healthcare to individuals incarcerated at the Polk County Jail in Des Moines, Iowa. The role works in a controlled correctional environment alongside correctional officers and other medical professionals. The Nurse Practitioner assesses, diagnoses, and treats patients with a range of medical conditions and chronic illnesses, prescribes medications, and responds to emergencies. The position supports NaphCare’s mission to provide quality care that protects the rights, dignity, and health of its patient population.

Requirements

• Advanced nursing education at the Master's or Doctorate level.
• Current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner.
• Current unrestricted Nurse Practitioner license in Iowa.
• Current DEA registration.
• Appropriate collaborative agreement with the on-site Physician.
• Active BLS CPR certification; American Heart Association certification is preferred.
• Certification by a board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.
• Knowledge of nursing practice principles and techniques, occupational health and safety standards, infectious disease management, applicable healthcare laws and regulations, and procedures for direct healthcare services.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of proprietary and confidential information.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Integrity, professionalism, and ability to follow a Code of Conduct and comply with facility correctional healthcare policies, procedures, and legal requirements.
• Must pass the facility's criminal background check and drug screening.
• Ability to stand for long periods; lift and move patients up to 50 pounds; bend, squat, reach, push, pull, walk significant distances, and perform physically demanding tasks such as CPR while maintaining balance and endurance throughout a shift.

Responsibilities

• Conduct physical examinations, develop treatment plans, and monitor patients.
• Manage acute and chronic conditions, including asthma, hypertension, and diabetes.
• Administer medications and provide instructions to patients.
• Monitor and document patient health, including vital signs and medical histories.
• Provide direct patient care, triage and assess patient needs, develop care plans, and coordinate services.
• Respond to medical emergencies, provide first aid, and ensure timely transport to appropriate healthcare facilities.
• Educate patients on preventative care, healthy lifestyle choices, and substance abuse prevention.
• Follow correctional facility security protocols and work with correctional officers and healthcare professionals to support patient safety and well-being.
• Maintain accurate medical records, document treatment plans, and report relevant information.
• Conduct rounds and evaluate patients returning from off-site treatment.
• Admit and discharge patients from the facility.
