About The Position

Function as a practitioner, consultant, and advocate in an interdisciplinary care team following the family-centered care philosophy. Provide advanced nursing care to neonates in a level two (2) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and to pediatric patients in a general pediatric inpatient unit. The role involves practicing autonomously, offering the full scope of Nurse Practitioner (NP) practice as outlined in the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) Practice Standard: Nurse Practitioner, and provincial and federal legislation. Duties include performing comprehensive health assessments, diagnosing health/illness conditions, communicating findings, consulting, referring, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and community services. The NP will provide direct comprehensive care to manage acute and chronic illness, counsel clients and care providers, and develop professional working relationships. Leadership is expected in developing, implementing, and evaluating strategies to promote health and prevent illness/injury, as well as assisting in the development of standards, guidelines, policies, and procedures. Participation in evaluation and research studies, supporting learner development through mentorship and supervision, and educating staff on respective units are also key aspects. The role includes supporting the on-call Pediatrician with complex care needs, participating in relevant councils and meetings, evaluating patient care and satisfaction, and aligning improvement projects with the organization's Strategic Plan. Education and training of staff, promoting health and safety in the workplace, and performing other duties as required are also part of the responsibilities.

Requirements

Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program.
Current Certificate of Registration as RN (Extended Class) in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certificate is required.
Current certification in Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is required.
Current certification in Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) is required.
Current certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is required.
Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner.
Minimum of three (3) years of NICU and Pediatric nursing experience within the last five (5) years.
Demonstrated ability to integrate in-depth knowledge of advanced nursing practice and theory, health management, health promotion, disease/injury prevention and other relevant biomedical and psychosocial theories to provide comprehensive health services.
Demonstrated knowledge regarding the nursing process and its application (i.e. assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care).
Proven leadership abilities with high levels of critical and logical thinking, analysis and/or reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons or facts.
Demonstrated high levels of initiative, resourcefulness, flexibility and adaptability.
Demonstrated health assessment/clinical skills.
Demonstrated commitment to patient and family-centred care.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and in a collaborative practice model as a member of an inter-professional team.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the relevant acts, regulations, legislation and standards related to Occupational Health and Safety in the hospital setting.

Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
Demonstrated time management skills with the ability to manage workload and adapt quickly to a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.

Nice To Haves

National Certification Corporation (NCC) Board Certification as a Neonatal or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner is preferred.
Experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of relevant advanced nursing practices is preferred.
Experience in the development of strategies to build capacity and improve health outcomes Is preferred.
Experience in the development of clinical guidelines and protocols, promoting the use of research and evidence-based practice to guide patient-centered care is preferred.
Recent teaching experience of applicable NICU and Pediatric clinical education programs is preferred.

Responsibilities

Practice autonomously, offering the full scope of Nurse Practitioner (NP) practice as outlined in the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) Practice Standard: Nurse Practitioner, and provincial and federal legislation.
Perform the responsibilities of the position within the legislative and regulatory standards set out in the applicable Provincial and Federal Acts and consistent with the operational policies of HSN.
Provide comprehensive health assessments to diagnose health/illness conditions, working within the legislated scope of an NP.
Communicate with care providers about health assessment findings and diagnosis.
Consult, refer, and collaborate with members of the multidisciplinary team and community services as required.
Provide direct comprehensive care to clients to manage acute and chronic illness within a holistic model of care.
Counsel clients and care providers on symptom management, health maintenance, pharmacotherapy, alternative therapies, rehabilitation strategies and other health programs.
Develop and maintain professional working relationships with all members of the interdisciplinary team and community agencies.
Collaborate with inter-professional teams and other healthcare providers and sectors and community members to determine and address healthcare priorities and related issues.
Provide leadership in the development, implementation and evaluation of strategies to promote health and prevent illness and injury.
Assist in the development and implementation of standards, guidelines, policies and procedures and medical directives.
Participate in pertinent evaluation and research studies related to patient’s healthcare, NP programs, practice and roles.
Support/assist in the development of education with the Nurse Clinicians that are guided by the needs of the staff on the respective units.
Support the Pediatrician on-call with patients presenting with complex care needs irrelevant of location.
Participate in councils, meetings, committees as required and as appropriate to the role.
Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
Contribute to learner development by providing academic support, mentorship, preceptorship and supervision as required.
Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
Perform other duties as required.
