About The Position

The Nurse Practitioner will work within a Juvenile Detention Facility in Detroit, MI. This role involves providing comprehensive healthcare services to adolescents, including physical examinations, management of chronic and acute conditions, performing basic procedures, and conducting sensitive examinations. The Nurse Practitioner will also be responsible for developing treatment plans, providing patient education on healthy habits and preventative strategies, prescribing medications, ordering and interpreting lab and imaging results, and collaborating with various healthcare professionals and external providers to ensure continuity of care. Documentation in the EMR, compliance with regulations, fostering a professional environment, and supporting discharge planning are also key aspects of the position.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher in Nursing from a nationally accredited program.
  • Current valid and unrestricted license to practice as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the State of Michigan.
  • Current certification through an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Credentialing Agency as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Two (2) or more years of post-degree experience as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Cleared to work in a childcaring institution by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and Child Protective Services.
  • Valid BLS Certification.
  • Valid Driver License with reliable transportation.
  • Basic computer skills with ability to navigate EMR.
  • Presently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Responsibilities

  • Complete comprehensive physical examinations of adolescents to assess health conditions and identify medical needs.
  • Manage chronic conditions including diabetes mellitus (type 1 and 2), asthma, seizure disorder, anemia, and basic mental health disorders.
  • Assess and manage acute conditions including trauma/injury, lacerations, head injuries, and respiratory infections.
  • Perform basic procedural skills including laceration repair, I&D, wound management, and basic trauma management.
  • Conduct male/female sensitive examinations with appropriate follow-up.
  • Complete Child Protective Services examinations for reported abuse and neglect.
  • Develop and manage treatment plans, including hospital and specialist follow-ups for acute and chronic conditions.
  • Provide patient guidance on healthy habits and preventative strategies, including diet, activity, and STIs.
  • Prescribe medications and provide instructions for appropriate administration.
  • Order and interpret lab and imaging results to guide treatment planning.
  • Collaborate with behavioral health, nursing, security, social work, and external providers for continuity of care.
  • Document patient interactions in the EMR, ensure compliance with facility/state regulations, foster a professional environment, and support discharge planning including medication dispensing.
  • Maintain records, reports, and meet deadlines.
  • Operate office machinery/equipment.
