About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Medical Director, the Nurse Practitioner functions within an organized system for the delivery of health care in association with other members of the multidisciplinary health care team and performs specialized nurse practitioner duties in a clinical setting. Work is reviewed for thoroughness, accuracy, and adherence to established policies and procedures and conformity with the department’s rules and regulations.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid Nurse Practitioner license issued by the Virgin Islands Board of Nurse Licensure
  • Possession of a national board certification, or eligibility as a Nurse Practitioner issued by a recognized national certifying body or organization.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification.
  • Master of Science degree from an accredited graduate school in nursing with two (2) years of clinical work experience.
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Knowledge of health issues and trends.
  • Knowledge of patient treatment plans.
  • Knowledge of Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or Advanced Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (ACLS).
  • Knowledge of ethical clinical standards.
  • Knowledge of traditional and web-based prescription systems
  • Knowledge of medication, management, and administration.
  • Knowledge of patient’s advocacy and rights.
  • Knowledge of recording patient health information into the electronic health record.
  • Knowledge of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards in relations to primary health and preventive care.
  • Knowledge of Centers for Medicare and Medicare Services.
  • Knowledge of well-established examination procedures of individuals.
  • Knowledge of diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of drugs/medication appropriate for adults and their side-effects.
  • Skill in performing physical examinations.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with a physician to provide complete physical examinations, diagnosis, prescriptions, and treatment of both chronic and episodic disorders.
  • Examines patients to evaluate health and diagnose illnesses.
  • Identifies and manages patients with unstable chronic diseases appropriate to clinical specialty.
  • Orders and performs diagnostic tests, such as x-rays and laboratory tests.
  • Assesses and diagnosis, develops treatment plans, adjusts treatments as necessary, and furnishes medications.
  • Provides urgent care to acutely ill patients.
  • Documents medical information of patients, maintains electronic medical records and adheres to patient privacy.
  • Counsels, educates, and instructs patients and families on presenting health problems, treatment plans, and home care.
  • Encourages and promotes preventative health care and positive health behaviors.
  • Participates in staff meetings and conferences regarding patient care, as well as quality improvement/control activities.
  • Requests consultation or referral with other health care providers, such as physicians and clinics.
  • Maintains current medical research and trends and supports research projects.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
