About The Position

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) for Burn Service at the Hamilton General Hospital is registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) in the Extended Class-adult, and will work within the scope of practice of the RN-EC provided by the CNO. Collaborating with the interprofessional team members and using a patient and family centered model of care, the NP will work in partnership with surgeons, the burn service, consultants, nursing and other members of the health care team to provide comprehensive medical assessment, management and education.

Requirements

• Current Certification of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class RN(EC) - Adult
• Completion of a Post-Master's of Nursing - Nurse Practitioner program with a focus in Acute care for Adults
• Minimum of five (5) years recent clinical experience supporting a population of burn patients or relevant experience
• Demonstrated experience in research and program development
• Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and competency to work within interprofessional teams
• Demonstrated leadership and critical thinking skills
• Experience and ability to lead and facilitate the development and implementation of basic and advanced education programs for patients, families, staff and other professionals
• Experience in providing leadership in the development and implementation of policies and best practice guidelines
• Experience in the development and maintenance of medical directives
• Demonstrated ability for independent action, initiative, problem solving, critical thinking, organization and prioritization
• Demonstrated mastery of effective communication with patients, families, coworkers, both written and verbal
• Demonstrated ability to work in a consultative role with the members of the interprofessional team
• Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adapt positively to constantly changing clinical situations
• Demonstrated ability to promote professional development in nursing
• Eligible for cross appointment with McMaster University School of Nursing at the undergraduate and graduate level

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care, including assessment and treatment of burn patients, coordination of care, discharge planning, clinic follow-up and reassessment, and the coordination of related community and other resources for this patient population
• Tutor and mentor nursing and other health professional students as appropriate and participate in continuing education activities to integrate the role of the NP in the program and academic settings
• Initiate, participate and / or lead programs, presentations, publications, evaluations, research initiatives and other system changes to continue the enhancement of interprofessional teams and quality care
