About The Position

The Fairfax County Sheriff's Office is seeking a dedicated and compassionate nurse practitioner to join the healthcare team at the Adult Detention Center. This is an opportunity to provide high-quality, patient-centered care in a unique public safety environment while making a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals in our care. Working as part of a multidisciplinary care team, the nurse practitioner provides comprehensive healthcare services, including physical examinations, laboratory and diagnostic procedures, assessment and treatment, medication management, health education, and development of individualized treatment plans. The ideal candidate will bring strong clinical judgment, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to delivering quality healthcare in a challenging and rewarding setting.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in nursing; plus, a master's degree in nursing as a clinical nurse practitioner.
  • Depending upon area of assignment, may require one year of experience as a certified nurse practitioner.
  • Licensed to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the state of Virginia and has obtained national certification as a nurse practitioner.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • X-waiver for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) treatment and prescribing capacity or ability to obtain this certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Must be able to work a shift work schedule which includes evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients, medical professionals, health care professionals and citizens.

Nice To Haves

  • Emergency room or critical care nursing experience.
  • Experience in corrections.
  • Experience treating individuals with medications for Opioid Use Disorder.
  • Experience providing primary care services as a certified nurse practitioner.
  • Experience working with individuals with behavioral health disorders.
  • X-waiver for OUD treatment and prescribing capacity.
  • Bilingual in English and another language.

Responsibilities

  • Provides services in consultation and collaboration with a licensed patient care team physician as part of a patient care team.
  • Performs physical examinations and records findings in clients' records.
  • Performs orders and interprets laboratory work and diagnostic procedures.
  • Assesses state of clients' health by obtaining medical, psychological and social histories.
  • Confers with physicians on abnormal results requiring physician's intervention.
  • Develops treatment plans, including prescribing medications, reviewing plans with clients to assess level of understanding.
  • Monitors treatments as required.
  • Refers clients to other health care providers.
  • Provides health education, counseling and guidance to clients and families.
  • Develops health education materials.
  • Develops and presents various training and orientation programs for nursing personnel, health care providers and other agency staff members.

Benefits

  • Sign-on bonus for fully qualified new county employees in the amount of $10,000 (full-time). This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee.
