About The Position

The Northern Arizona VA Health Care System (NAVHCS) provides health care services to Veterans across 65,000 square miles. Their Medical Mobile Services bring primary care, mental health, and specialty services to remote areas, including the Chinle VA Clinic, Kayenta VA Clinic, Page VA Clinic, Polacca/Hopi Clinic, and Tuba City VA Clinic. This role involves performing psychiatric evaluations and treatment, managing psychiatric services, conducting intake evaluations, preparing case histories, prescribing and evaluating therapeutic measures, diagnosing psychiatric disorders using the DSM-5, providing outpatient treatment including psychopharmacology and psychotherapy, referring for inpatient admissions, and providing psychiatric consultation for complex cases.

Requirements

  • Master's or doctoral degree in nursing.
  • Graduate from an academic program, within the nursing specialty field of study that is accredited by a regional or national nursing accrediting agency recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), or the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
  • Hold and maintain BLS and ACLS certification through the American Heart Association or client guidelines.
  • Certified in the specialty as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), or the recognized national nursing certification organization for the specialty area of practice as appropriate.
  • At least 5 years experience working in a mental health clinic.
  • Board Certification: Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
  • Maintain an active, valid, current, and unrestricted license (with no limitations, stipulations, or pending adverse actions) to practice nursing as a Nurse Practitioner from any state or territory of the United States or the District of Columbia.
  • Ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Perform psychiatric evaluations and treatment.
  • Examine, evaluate, diagnose, and treat psychiatric disorders.
  • Manage and direct psychiatric services.
  • Conduct intake evaluations on a routine and emergency basis.
  • Prepare and review case histories and obtain and evaluate data through interviews.
  • Prescribe and evaluate the effectiveness of a wide range of therapeutic measures.
  • Integrate findings and formulate clinical information to establish a diagnosis in association with criteria set down in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders of the American Psychiatric Association.
  • Determine the appropriate treatment setting and provide a variety of treatment modalities in an outpatient setting, which include psychopharmacology and traditional interactive psychotherapies.
  • Refer, coordinate, and facilitate inpatient admissions for admission to psychiatric or partial hospitalization facilities.
  • Provide psychiatric consultation to mental health patients who present with complicated psychiatric conditions.
