About The Position

Heartland Family Service is seeking a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner to provide patient assessment and diagnosis, prescribe medications, order laboratory tests, and offer patient education at the Sarpy County Jail. This role involves collaboration with other prescribers at the jail and the Heartland Family Service Mental Health Clinician. The position offers psychiatric health services, education, short-term counseling, and emotional support. The Nurse Practitioner will issue medication prescriptions in accordance with treatment guidelines and educate patients on medications, risks, benefits, and expected outcomes to promote mental health. This is a fast-paced, collaborative, and team-oriented environment focused on building healthy families and communities.

Requirements

  • A minimum of five years of progressive experience in the Behavioral Health Nursing field.
  • A minimum of a master’s Degree in nursing from an accredited (ANCC) educational institution.
  • Must also be licensed or willing to become licensed in Nebraska as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, APRN.
  • Licensed with the Drug Enforcement Administration in Nebraska.

Responsibilities

  • Offer patient assessment and diagnosis.
  • Prescribe medications.
  • Order laboratory tests.
  • Provide patient education.
  • Collaborate with other Sarpy County Jail prescribers and the Heartland Family Service Mental Health Clinician.
  • Provide psychiatric health services, education, short term counseling, and emotional support.
  • Issue medication prescriptions in accordance with treatment guidelines.
  • Educate patients regarding medications, risks, benefits, and reasonable outcome expectations to promote mental health.
  • Communicate with patients and engage in follow-up as necessary.
  • Prescribe medications within their scope of practice to include the parameters of jail medicine.
  • Complete routine medical history and physical examinations when needed.
  • Evaluate and assess the bio-psycho-social needs of clients.
  • Develop comprehensive treatment plans in accordance with policy and procedures.
  • Engage in clinical rounds of patients while on the Behavioral Health Unit at the Sarpy County Jail.
  • Complete updates as required.
  • Communicate information to other agencies/organizations as appropriate.
  • Provide assessments, progress notes, treatment plan updates, and discharge summaries in accordance with agency policy.
  • Documentation is completed within 24 hours of therapeutic interaction.
  • Provide consultation with therapists and jail staff on complex cases.
  • Provide, when indicated, case consultation with significant persons in the client’s life.
  • Is dependable and punctual regarding scheduling and attendance.
  • Display a courteous and caring attitude at all times to the clientele, volunteers, and visitors of Heartland Family Service.
  • Cooperate and collaborate with program area staff, volunteers, and other Agency staff.
  • Abide by all specific program and Agency procedures, policies and requirements.
  • Develop personal and program related skills through participation in internal and external training opportunities including printed material and audio and/or visual media.
  • Create, maintain, and share an appropriate and dynamic self-care plan.
  • Strive to make connections between the agency and the larger community whenever possible in order to contribute to the agency’s ongoing fundraising and friend-raising efforts.
  • Perform other program related duties as assigned.
