About The Position

The University of Rochester is seeking a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join their busy, growing Acute Pain Service within the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. This service provides patient-centered care across various hospital units, including the Level 1 Trauma Center, Cardiac Surgery, Burn/Trauma, thoracic surgery, orthopedic surgery, and Wilmot Cancer Center. The role offers an opportunity to improve continuity of care for existing patients as attendings and residents rotate. The position also involves participation in quality initiatives, research, and education for learners and staff. Additionally, the APP will contribute to a pilot program for transitional pain services focused on opioid weaning in high-risk patients.

Requirements

  • Master's degree as a Nurse Practitioner (for NPs)
  • Active New York State Registered Nurse license in good standing (for NPs)
  • Active New York State Nurse Practitioner licensure in good standing (for NPs)
  • Current national certification as an Nurse Practitioner (for NPs)
  • Completion of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant program (for PAs)
  • Active New York State Physician Assistant licensure in good standing (for PAs)
  • Current national certification as a Physician Assistant by NCCPA (for PAs)
  • Demonstrated clinical competence
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Interpersonal effectiveness and customer relation skills
  • Computer competence
  • Active desire to learn
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in postoperative pain management is a plus, but not required
  • New graduates are welcome to apply

Responsibilities

  • Performing initial H&P on new acute pain consults
  • Daily rounding on patients
  • Developing and communicating pain management plans to primary teams
  • Suggesting referrals to other services (PT/OT, psychiatry, etc.)
  • Collaborating on complex pain management issues
  • Reviewing data and recommendations with Anesthesiologist Attending
  • Assisting with acute pain procedures
  • Participating in quality initiatives such as the development, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive perioperative, opioid-sparing, and enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols
  • Assisting in providing education regarding pain management therapies to residents and nursing staff
  • Participating in a pilot transitional pain services line for opioid weaning in high-risk patients
