Requirements

  • Candidates must have passed the certification exam for either Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner.
  • Master’s degree in nursing required (for Nurse Practitioner)
  • Graduate of a Physician Assistant Program accredited by the Accreditation and Review Commission on Physician Assistant Education (ARC-PA) (for Physician Assistant)
  • BLS/PALS/ACLS
  • Current Advanced Practice Nurse License issued by the Tennessee State Board of Nursing (LC: AP-TN) (for Nurse Practitioner)
  • Current Tennessee State Board of Nursing license if primary residence is Tennessee or a Nurse Licensure non-Compact state (LC:RN-TN), or a current State Board of Nursing license in the state of primary residence if the state is a Nurse Licensure Compact state (LC: RN-ARK, RN-MISS or RN-KY) (for Nurse Practitioner)
  • Supervising Physician: verified by St. Jude Managed Care Department (LC: SUPMD)
  • Nurse Practitioner Certification: American Nurses Credentialing Center (LC:ANCC-NP) or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (LC: AA-NP) or Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (LC: PNCB) (for Nurse Practitioner)
  • Certificate of Fitness: State of Tennessee - Division of Health Related Boards (LC: CERTFIT)
  • DEA certification: U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration within 6 months of employment (LC: DEA)
  • (LC:PA-TN) Licensed by the state of TN Board of Medical Examiners to practice as a physician assistant. (for Physician Assistant)
  • (LC:NCCPA-CERT) Certified by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). (for Physician Assistant)
  • (LC:SUPMD) Supervising Physician verified by St. Jude Managed Care Department. (for Physician Assistant)
  • (LC:DEA) DEA certified by U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration within 6 months of employment. (for Physician Assistant)

Nice To Haves

  • Acute Care Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner certification is highly preferred.
  • Pediatrics and hematology and/or oncology experience preferred
  • Pediatric intensive care experience preferred
  • Acute Care Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (CPNP-AC) Certificate (for Nurse Practitioner)

Responsibilities

  • Performs patient care duties in the designated service according to established standards, general and services specific scopes of care, policies and procedures, and patient-specific protocols.
  • Obtains medical, family and social histories, performs physical examination, orders appropriate and interprets appropriate diagnostic studies and laboratory tests.
  • Interprets patient data to accurately diagnose disease and disease stage.
  • Identifies appropriate medical treatment, whether protocol or non-protocol, participates in the implementation of appropriate medical treatment.
  • May write orders as permitted by the Clinical Staff Rules and Regulations, monitors and evaluates patient response to medical treatment, facilitates appropriate patient referrals, provides patient and family support, provides patient follow-up to other health care providers, including referring physicians, performs diagnostic procedures as prescribed by treatment guidelines or as indicated by changes in clinical status.
  • Collects and records data as required by utilizing effective verbal and written communication skills to obtain and document patient information in the medical record or other records as required.
  • Monitors treatment guideline/clinical research flow sheets and other pertinent written records and participates in scholarly dissemination of research data.
  • Collaborates in the development of clinical research flow sheets by assisting in the collection, analysis and interpretation of historical patient data.
  • Assists in research by careful collaboration in the development of clinical research objectives and the implementation of, and adherence to clinical trial protocols.
  • Accurately records information according to medical and research requirements.
  • Educates patients, families, students and participates in the orientation of new employees.
  • Assesses the learning needs and abilities of patients and families, to facilitate their development of self-care.
  • Effectively communicates verbally and in writing.
  • Orients and precepts advanced practice students, medical residents, nursing visitors, medical and nursing fellows in clinical areas.
  • Maintains current knowledge as related to the profession and job responsibilities by regularly attending conferences and meetings at the hospital and off-site.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary identify and provide care appropriate to any age-related needs of the patients served on the assigned unit.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development for all ages served and is able to assess and interpret age-specific data about the patient’s status.
  • Participates in the detection, reporting and improvement of systems, to prevent patient care incidents and improve patient safety and quality.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned in order to meet the goals of the department and institution.
  • Participates in elements of care coordination across the continuum.
