About The Position

The Medical University of South Carolina Department Orthopaedics and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is hiring for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant for their foot and ankle orthopaedic division in an outpatient setting. The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will be responsible for travelling to different MUSC ambulatory clinics to support the foot and ankle orthopaedic division. The role will join a busy and thriving Orthopaedic Surgery practice consisting of two foot and ankle surgeons, two podiatrists, and an Advanced Practice Provider (APP).

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant.
  • Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN.
  • For APRN: AGPNP/ANP (Adult Gerontology Primary Care NP or Adult NP) for adult patients (13 years to death), stable chronic disease state management or primary care setting.
  • For APRN: FNP (Family NP) for patients (birth to death) with stable chronic disease state management, primary care across the lifespan.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification must be current and complete prior to start date.
  • If applicable, DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to first day.
  • APRN or PA must maintain licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in Orthopaedic Surgery or another surgical subspecialty.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care, including taking comprehensive histories and performing physical examinations.
  • Evaluate and treat patients based on history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline.
  • Perform therapeutic procedures in accordance with procedural privileges, skill, and proficiency as approved by the Clinical Division Chief, including suturing lacerations/wounds, suture/staple removal, placement/removal of surgical drains and tubes, incision and drainage of abscesses.
  • Administer IV medications, IM/SC injections, and local anesthetic.
  • Order and initiate peripheral venous access.
  • Obtain body fluids for testing via venipuncture, arterial access, aspiration of seroma/hematoma, and urinary catheter.
  • Perform wound management (debridement and closure, dressing take-down and application).
  • Prescribe medical devices.
  • Perform splinting/casting, fracture/joint reduction, and joint injection/aspiration.
  • Initiate referrals to other health care providers, and/or consult with the attending physician or the collaborating physician.
  • Document and bill for direct care provided.
  • Utilize current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice.
  • Perform and participate in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research.
  • Participate in and support accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.
  • Demonstrate responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
  • Potentially precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student; and facilitate the learning of other new team members.
  • Maintain licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law.
  • Travel to different MUSC ambulatory clinics to support assigned physicians.
