About The Position

The successful applicant will be a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant interested in working full-time in the care of women’s health. This role joins a busy and thriving Obstetrics and Gynecology Division that includes 28 ObGyn Specialists, 7 Gynecologic Oncologists, 3 Urogynecologists, 11 Maternal Fetal Medicine providers, and 11 General OBGYN APPs. The ideal candidate will work in the outpatient clinic as well as either First Assist in the OR or work on Labor & Delivery a few days per month. MUSC Obstetrics and Gynecology aims to be a leader in women’s care and the provider of choice for ObGyn in the Lowcountry.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant
  • Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN
  • Physician Assistant or APRN License Type/Certification: AGPNP/ANP (Adult Gerontology Primary Care NP or Adult NP) for adult patients (13 years to death), stable chronic disease state management or primary care setting
  • Physician Assistant or APRN License Type/Certification: FNP (Family NP) for patients (birth to death) with stable chronic disease state management, primary care across the lifespan
  • 1 year of Women’s Health experience as a PA or APRN
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification must be current and complete prior to start date
  • If applicable, DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to first day

Nice To Haves

  • Physician Assistant (PA) or if APRN, License Type/Certification: WHNP (Women’s Health NP) for OB/GYN services and well women care (12 years to death), only eligible to work in women’s health; however, not certified to deliver babies
  • Physician Assistant or APRN License Type/Certification: CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife) for OBGYN services and well women care
  • RNFA Certification (required to first assist)
  • Minimum of 2 years of Women’s Health experience as a PA or APRN

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct care to patients through comprehensive history taking and physical examinations in outpatient clinics
  • Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline
  • Consults with physician when clinically indicated and according to protocols
  • Makes referrals to other services and specialties, providing patients with information, support, and counseling
  • Manages women’s health care with emphasis on the maternity cycle with independence
  • Provides antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care as well as family planning and well-women gynecological care consistent with MUSC practice, state and national guidelines, and generally accepted standards
  • Documents care appropriately and in a timely fashion
  • Acts within his/her scope of practice
  • Monitors pregnancy and manages common medical conditions such as hyperemesis, UTIs, STDs, size/date discrepancy, postdates, anemia, and poor weight gain during prenatal/antepartum care
  • Performs Periodic Health Examinations, Annual Exams, Pap smears, colposcopy, endometrial biopsies, contraception, ultrasound, peri and post-menopausal care, insertion and removal of contraceptive implants and intrauterine devices, and contraceptive devices for family planning/gynecology
  • Performs therapeutic procedures including colposcopy, endometrial biopsies, ultrasound, insertion and removal of contraceptive implants and intrauterine devices in accordance with procedural privileges, skill, and proficiency as approved by the Clinical Division Chief
  • Provides obstetric triage and patient care on labor and delivery in coordination with supervising physicians
  • Initiates referrals to other health care providers, and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician
  • Surgical first assist in traditional and Davinvi Ob/Gyn related OR procedures approximately 2 days per week
  • Documents and bills for direct care provided
  • Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice
  • Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research
  • Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization
