About The Position

MUSC’s Department of Emergency Medicine is looking for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join its team of Advanced Practice Providers. Incumbent will provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive healthcare services for direct patient care in the Adult Emergency Departments in the Main University Hospital and Ashley River Tower, as delegated by the Emergency Medicine physician. Fair Labor Standards Act Status: Salaried/Exempt Scheduled Work Hours/Shift: 1,720 clinical hours per year, comprised of 10-hour shifts, with up to 50% of shifts on nights or weekends. Patient Population Focus Emergency Department Management Patient Population Age Range 13years-death

Requirements

Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN as noted below.
Physician Assistant or APRN AGPNP/ANP (Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult Nurse Practitioner): Adult pts (13 years to death), stable chronic disease state management or primary care setting.
FNP (Family Nurse Practitioner): (birth to death) Stable chronic disease state management, primary care across the lifespan.
Basic Life Support (BLS).
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required for adult inpatient positions
Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) as required by our Level I Trauma Center
DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to first day.

Nice To Haves

Physician Assistant (PA) or if APRN, License Type/Certification Physician Assistant or APRN AGACNP or ACNP (Adult Gerontology Acute Care NP/Acute Care Nurse Practitioner): Adult pts (13 years to death), acutely ill or injured, potentially unstable, or technologically dependent (vents, drips, monitors, etc.)
FNP with current Emergency Room Nurse Practitioner (ENP) Certification
AGPNP/ANP with current Emergency Room Nurse Practitioner (ENP) Certification
Minimum of 1 year experience as a PA or APRN in an Emergency Department setting or completion of an Emergency Medicine Fellowship/Residency

Responsibilities

Provides direct care to patients through the following activities: Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations
Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline
Performs the following therapeutic procedures in accordance with procedural privileges, skill and proficiency as approved by the Clinical Division Chief: Administration of Local and Digital Anesthesia Complicated and Uncomplicated Repair of Lacerations Removal of Foreign Bodies from Eyes, Ears, Nose, Skin, and Wounds Trepanation of Subungual Hematomas Incision and Drainage of Abscesses Urethral Catheterization Placement of Peripheral Venous Access Placement of Central Lines [with proof of competency] Placement of Thoracostomy Endotracheal Intubation [with proof of competency] ACLS Arterial Puncture Venipuncture Lumbar Puncture [with proof of competency] Application of Splints Arthrocentesis
Initiates referrals to other health care providers, and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician
Documents and bills for direct care provided
Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice
Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research
Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization
Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education
Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student; and facilitates the learning of other new team members
APRN or PA must maintain licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law
