About The Position

This position is for a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) in the Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit (CSICU) at Mass General Brigham. The role involves providing care for patients admitted to the CSICU under the supervision of Cardiac Surgeons and Heart Center Intensivists. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will participate in daily rounds, perform bedside procedures, develop and implement care plans, coordinate tests, implement treatment plans, communicate with referring physicians, educate patients, and prepare them for discharge. The APP will also maintain communication between various medical teams, patients, and families, promoting collaboration and serving as a role model for APP practice.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree Nursing or Physician Assistant required
  • Registered Nurse [RN - MA License]
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse [APRN] [MA License] or Physician Assistant [MA License]
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU experience, preferably Cardiac ICU preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of reading ECG, Radiology, and Laboratory data
  • Basic understanding of ventilators, PA catheters, Mechanical Circulatory Support devices, and vasoactive medications
  • Ability to function in a high intensity, complex unit within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Candidates with related experience (Trauma/ED, Inpatient Cardiology, Heart Failure practice) will be considered.
  • Experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in Cardiac Surgery preferred
  • Credentialed with Operative First Assist
  • Acts as a responding clinician for patients with ventricular assist devices.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in daily rounds with nurses, other Advanced Practice staff, Intensivists, residents, and multidisciplinary caregivers.
  • Perform bedside diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of care plans.
  • Coordinate tests and consultations.
  • Implement treatment plans.
  • Communicate with referring physicians.
  • Perform patient education.
  • Prepare patients for discharge.
  • Maintain open lines of communication between Cardiac Surgeons, Residents, Fellows, PAs, Nursing Staff, Cardiologists, Heart Failure team, Intensivists, and patients/families.
  • Promote a collaborative relationship and effort between the medical staff and professional nurses toward continuity of patient care and efficient use of resources.
  • Serve as a role model for professional APP practice.
  • Provide direct care, counseling, and teaching to patient population in the cardiac surgery department.
  • Assist surgeons in the operating room, performing technical clinical procedures.
  • Perform complete histories and physical examinations.
  • Order, interpret, and evaluate appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Develop appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings.
  • Order medications and write prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Provide high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes and discharge summaries.
  • Perform bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population.
