About The Position

The Nurse Practitioner, RN (EC) provides primary comprehensive primary health care services in the areas of prevention, treatment of disease and injury and support for students. All services must be provided in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario’s Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses in the Extended Class. The Nurse Practitioner works both independently and in collaboration with other members of our interdisciplinary team.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Nursing - Primary Health Care
  • Registration in the Nurse Extended Class (Nurse Practitioner) and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Bilingualism: French and English (spoken and written), to be considered for this position, candidates must be rated at the Low Advanced proficiency level or higher for both oral comprehension and reading comprehension in their second official language. The rating is determined by a proficiency test designed by the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute.
  • Three (3) years of experience in a clinical nursing practice as a Nurse Practitioner in a primary or tertiary setting.
  • Valid certification for Basic Life Saving
  • Working knowledge of legislation informing the practice (i.e., Health Care Consent Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act, Regulated Health Professions Act, etc.)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to inter-professional care
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team
  • Experience in dealing with mental health issues including trauma-informed care, crisis management including pharmacological management of common presentations like mood and anxiety disorders as well as sleep disturbances
  • Excellent health assessment skills, clinical judgment, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong clinical and effective time management skills.
  • Ability to effectively deal with situations that have no precedent are sensitive, confidential and may be high-risk.
  • Ability to propose creative and safe solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to respect diversity and use inclusive behaviour, responding with sensitivity and self-awareness to the unique needs of students, including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity.

Nice To Haves

  • Working exposure in a post secondary teaching institution an asset
  • Previous experience with Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) (ex.: Telus PS suite, OSCAR, Purkinje).

Responsibilities

  • Performs various clinical tasks by conducting health assessments, diagnosis, therapeutics, and health education for students in respect to all protocols and standards within their professional practice.
  • Completes students’ health assessment and documents all pertinent medical information in the electronic medical record application to ensure continuity of care.
  • Maintains confidentiality and its application to student electronic health records in accordance with legislation and internal organizational policies and procedures.
  • Communicates diagnosis and treatment plan options and as such provides acute and chronic care management by working autonomously to accomplish those related tasks and, as need be, consults with physicians and/or other health care providers.
  • Prescribes treatments, makes prescriptions, referrals for investigations and consultations of students according to policies and protocols within scope of practice as to ensure proper and timely student care.
  • Respond to emergency situations and implement appropriate interventions.
  • adheres to infection control safety standards to protect other employees and patients from safety hazards.
  • Accomplishes other duties as assigned within NP scope of practice.
