About The Position

A Nurse Practitioner (NP) in the Neuro Endovascular Surgery (NES) Division possesses advanced education, knowledge, clinical skills, and experience to provide expert nursing care. This role involves clinical practice, education, consultation, research, utilization review, and leadership within the NES Division and the Medical Center. The NP provides direct care to patients with complex neurovascular problems, working under the direction of a Supervising Physician and Clinic Administrator. Responsibilities span the continuum of neurovascular care, including ambulatory care clinics, inpatient settings, and post-operative evaluation through clinic appointments and telephone triage. The NP must comply with Medical Center House and Telephone Standards.

Requirements

Graduation from a California Board of Registered Nursing approved or verified school of nursing with a master’s degree in nursing or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).
1-3 years experience as nurse practitioner in Neurology, Neurovascular, Neurosurgery or Neuro IR.
California Registered Nurse (RN) License without restriction
California Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) without restriction
California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number including Schedule II furnishing privileges
NP national board certification from an accepted certifying agency aligned with the patient population and clinical role (Adult Hybrid Inpatient and Outpatient: ACNP-BC, AGACNP-BC, ACNPC-AG, ACNPC).
California Driver License (if required for position)
Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Registration with Schedules 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, and 5 registered to a California address
American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Additional required AHA certifications: ACLS
UCSF Medical Center requires all Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) to be credentialed through its Office of Medical Affairs and Governance (OMAG) to practice and function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric APPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings. Credentialing takes between 60-90 days and must be completed prior to the first working day.

Responsibilities

Identifies potential patients through referrals, educates patients and families about their disease and treatment.
Evaluates patients by performing history and physical examinations and ordering laboratory tests.
Plans care in conjunction with Neuro IR physicians and other medical teams.
Performs daily inpatient rounds with Neuro IR physicians.
Maintains ongoing inpatient assessment and communicates with other services.
Remains available to patients and families.
Writes orders under the supervision of Neuro IR physicians.
Performs discharge planning.
Maintains communication with patients/families after discharge through telephone follow-up.
Fields inquiries from patients and outside caregivers and responds quickly and appropriately with guidance from Neuro IR physicians.
Maintains proper records on each patient.
Provides assessment of patient, staff, and nursing needs and educates as necessary.
Contributes to the ongoing professional development of nursing staff in the area of specialization.
Maintains records as appropriate.
Assists administrative staff in arranging patient transfers, discharges, consultations, and follow-up.
Screens patients for clinical trials, coordinates data collection, analyzes, drafts, and revises research protocols.
Coordinates NES clinic appointments, imaging requests, and scheduling of appointments with subspecialists.
Coordinates anesthesia for scheduled procedures.
Assists staff and physicians with the insurance authorization process as needed.
Performs follow-up phone calls for NES clinic patients for routine NES-related health conditions and post-procedural care.
Performs inpatient daily rounds with or under the supervision of NES physicians as needed.
Performs ongoing assessment of NES patient progress, changes, and condition, reporting to NES physicians as necessary.
Responds to patient care requests by phone, appropriately triages patient care, and seeks advice from NES physicians as needed.
Maintains communication with care team members and assists with patient care as needed.
