About The Position

University Medical Center New Orleans is seeking a dedicated and highly skilled Inpatient Neurosurgical Nurse Practitioner to join their collaborative Neurosurgery team. This advanced practice role offers the opportunity to work alongside neurosurgeons, intensivists, residents, nurses, and multidisciplinary care teams to provide exceptional care for patients with acute and complex neurological conditions. As an integral member of the Neurosurgery service, you will play a key role in managing inpatient care, coordinating treatment plans, facilitating patient transitions, and helping drive positive outcomes throughout the continuum of care. At University Medical Center, you'll practice at the top of your license while caring for a diverse patient population in a fast-paced academic environment. Requirements

  • Master's Degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program required.
  • Current Louisiana Registered Nurse (RN) License.
  • Current Louisiana Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) License.
  • Current Nurse Practitioner Certification.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification preferred.
  • Neurosurgery, Neurocritical Care, Critical Care, Trauma, or Surgical Advanced Practice experience preferred.
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
  • Experience managing complex inpatient populations in a hospital setting.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive daily assessments and neurological examinations on inpatient neurosurgical patients.
  • Conduct daily rounds and collaborate closely with attending neurosurgeons and consulting providers.
  • Manage and coordinate inpatient neurosurgical care plans.
  • Monitor patient progress and respond to changes in clinical condition.
  • Review laboratory data, diagnostic imaging, and other clinical findings to guide treatment decisions.
  • Coordinate specialty consultations and diagnostic testing.
  • Facilitate discharge planning and transitions of care to ensure continuity and optimal outcomes.
  • Assess acute, critical, and chronically ill patients for urgent and emergent conditions.
  • Utilize advanced clinical judgment to evaluate physiologic instability and formulate treatment plans.
  • Perform therapeutic interventions within the approved scope of practice and credentialing guidelines.
  • Analyze indications, contraindications, risks, benefits, and outcomes of treatment interventions.
  • Collaborate with physicians and the interdisciplinary team to optimize patient care and recovery.
  • Develop, implement, evaluate, and modify patient care plans based on clinical response.
  • Manage changes in patient condition with a focus on improving outcomes and enhancing recovery.
  • Incorporate health promotion, injury prevention, and patient education into every phase of care.
  • Coordinate patient movement throughout the healthcare continuum, including discharge and follow-up planning.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for patients, families, nursing staff, and healthcare providers.
  • Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, procedures, and recovery expectations.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive, patient-centered care.
  • Support staff education and clinical excellence initiatives.
  • Participate in research, evidence-based practice initiatives, and educational activities.
  • Maintain clinical competencies and pursue ongoing professional development.
  • Serve as a mentor and preceptor for nurses, advanced practice providers, students, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Contribute to a culture of learning, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Champion patient safety by identifying and addressing potential concerns.
  • Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
  • Report and communicate actual or potential safety events through appropriate organizational channels.
  • Promote best practices that enhance quality outcomes and patient experiences.
