About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Lead MAT program's Addiction Medicine specialist physician, this role drives safe and high-quality care resulting in improved patient outcomes. The Nurse Practitioner participates in substance use disorder (SUD) services geared towards enhancing patient experience, including detoxification, residential, and outpatient services based on individual needs.

Requirements

  • Master's degree.
  • Advanced Practice Certification (NP/PA).
  • Current and valid license for Washington DC.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in correctional healthcare, emergency medicine, or primary care.
  • Experienced in ability to provide ongoing assessment, evaluation of patients suffering from substance abuse disorders and formulate effective therapeutic treatment plans.
  • Ability to provide harm reduction teaching, stabilization, and monitoring of patients in the ambulatory community-based treatment model.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with other healthcare providers and lead a team of healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team will be essential in providing comprehensive patient care.
  • Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills.
  • Proficient in electronic medical records and CRISP.
  • Excellent communication and organizational abilities.

  • Knowledge of correctional care regulations, including NCCHC and ACA standards.

Responsibilities

  • Provides preventative, diagnostic, and therapeutic services to adults suffering from the disease of addiction.
  • Develops and participates in screening programs for Alcohol, opioid use disorders, and benzodiazepine addiction.
  • Practices independently to obtain medical histories and conduct physical examinations and evaluations as appropriate for this patient population in Urgent care, Primary care, and Infirmary (Hospital) settings, including detoxification from Alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, and methamphetamines.
  • Prescribes, manages, and adjusts Suboxone, Methadone, Vivitrol, and Benzodiazepines dosages to meet patients’ needs.
  • Develops treatment protocols and policies for the SUD/Pain management clinic.
  • Participates in scheduled meetings with SUD program manager and nursing leadership.
  • Functions as a Participant for the QI Committee for MOUD.
  • Assists with QI outcome studies for NCCHC accreditation when needed.
  • Is knowledgeable about Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) Program.
  • Completes ACA Data reports for the addiction treatment team along with the DOC data team.
  • Provides brief counseling/psychotherapy and motivational interviewing to residents.
  • Successfully tapers patients with Benzodiazepine addiction and offers other alternative treatments, submitting referrals to Mental Health.
  • Assists Peer Navigators with arranging aftercare for addiction treatment at drug treatment facilities and methadone/Suboxone clinics.
  • Provides education and precepts NP residency students, medical students, residents, and fellows about substance abuse and medicated assisted treatment options.
