About The Position

This position is funded by a grant for a duration of time as defined by the grant. The Nurse Practitioner functions as a clinical practitioner and consultant across multiple specialty areas under the direction of the clinical health provider or designee. Provides expert, evidence-based nursing care and promotes innovative approaches to patient and family care in accordance with established public health protocols and standards.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of advanced professional clinical experience.
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in nursing.
  • An equivalent combination of related training and experience.
  • Active, unrestricted license as an advanced practice nurse (Nurse Practitioner) in the State of Tennessee, OR an application for license transfer to Tennessee must be in process for consideration.
  • PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
  • Expert knowledge in the principles of nursing and the ability to function independently in a clinical setting in his/her specialty.
  • Expert knowledge of the social determinants of health affecting the overall health of people, families, and communities.
  • Knowledge of the aims and purposes of the local health department.
  • Ability to collaborate, coordinate, lead others in improvement of health care, and exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making informed decisions.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact professionally and tactfully with patients, families, coworkers, and community partners.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel and Word) and other County software applications.
  • Must possess a valid Tennessee driver's license or secure one as of employment date.
  • Must have daily access to an operable automobile and meet county requirements for automobile insurance upon date of employment.
  • Must have prescriptive authority for the State of Tennessee.
  • Evidence of certification from ANA or a national certifying body within the first year of employment.
  • Must maintain all required licenses, certifications, and training credentials throughout the duration of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs reproductive health physical assessments (female and male) and appropriate diagnostic procedures, prescribes treatment for uncomplicated reproductive health-related medical problems, provides referral(s) (as indicated), provides reproductive health education and counseling, and follow-up care.
  • Assumes professional leadership responsibilities in the health care system by participating in the clinical training of nurses in specialized training programs.
  • Serves as preceptor to new practitioners and participates in staff education programs for other public health nurses and practitioners.
  • Keeps medical records and reports.
  • Develops and implements plans for teaching and counseling individuals, families, and groups in various settings for the prevention of disease and maintenance of health.
  • Contributes to the review and revision of clinical protocols, including reproductive health guidelines, and participates in peer review activities to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Participates in developing and implementing special programs within the department.
  • Demonstrates clinical leadership by supporting protocol development, mentoring staff and students, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Performs assigned public health emergency preparedness and response duties, including required training and participation in drills and disaster response activities.
  • Performs other related duties as required or directed.
