About The Position

The GI Oncology Nurse Navigator serves as the primary point of contact for all patients newly diagnosed with gastrointestinal (GI) cancers within the Mount Auburn Hospital GI Division. In collaboration with multidisciplinary providers, this role coordinates the diagnostic work-up, facilitates timely access to care, and supports patients and clinicians throughout the cancer care continuum. The Navigator maintains comprehensive tracking systems, ensures smooth transitions between stages of evaluation and treatment, and contributes to performance metrics and quality-improvement initiatives across the Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) network. Requirements

  • Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) required
  • American Heart Association – Basic Life Support certificate required
  • Demonstrated ability to review clinical materials and coordinate diagnostic and treatment plans.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple patients and data systems.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across departments.
  • Experience with computer systems required, including web-based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Advanced practice nursing or equivalent licensure preferred.
  • ONC, Patient Navigator, Nurse Navigator or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Experience in oncology, gastroenterology, care coordination, or nurse navigation is strongly preferred.
  • EPIC experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the initial contact and ongoing resource for patients with newly diagnosed GI cancers.
  • Coordinate staging and diagnostic work-up, including laboratory testing, imaging studies, and initial specialty consultations.
  • Prepare and route clinical orders for physician signature when appropriate.
  • Maintain an up-to-date database of all GI cancer patients from diagnosis through active treatment.
  • Track progress of all patients to ensure timely access to testing, appointments, and interventions, proactively identifying and addressing barriers to care.
  • Organize and facilitate a monthly multidisciplinary review meeting including GI, surgery, medical oncology, radiology, radiation oncology, and pathology.
  • Compile, analyze, and report metrics related to GI cancer epidemiology, care timelines, delays, and deviations from care plans.
  • Support non-oncologic GI care needs as required, including triage of complex cases, coordination between departments, assistance with urgent referrals, and patient communication.
