The Nurse Manager (NM) directs and supervises the clinical functions and activities of the department or group of practices. This role implements and interprets policies, standards, and regulations for personnel, patients, and families. The Nurse Manager partners with operational and physician leadership to make strategic decisions regarding clinical processes, clinical workforce budgets, and the purchase of clinical equipment, ensuring these decisions align with regulatory standards and organizational financial goals. They maintain personnel records, assist with payroll and OSHA compliance, and supervise clinical team members, including selection, performance appraisal, and work allocation. The role involves developing and implementing training programs, ensuring correct onboarding, and facilitating yearly competencies. The Nurse Manager identifies patient needs, recommends new programs and services, and ensures the delivery of quality services. They participate in hospital/medical staff committee meetings, act as a liaison for physician leadership, and serve on professional/civic service organizations. Additionally, they direct activities to achieve department objectives, establish quality levels, and assess activities for continuous quality improvement. The Nurse Manager serves as a role model, applies management counseling skills, and promotes good interpersonal relationships, while enhancing professional growth and development.
